Managed to get it to go 90° to the lean without the strap.

 

Is that wood as red in person as it looks in the pic? What species? Some kind of eucalyptus?

 

Yes, they range from orange to deep maroon

 

Looks a lot like Australian Red Gum; amazing wood so tough termites won’t eat it. And yes Eckie it is a eucalyptus tree.
