Do you prefer smaller or bigger rounds with the log lift? Do you find yourself picking them up rather than using the lift?
No I let the lift do all the work. Smaller rounds like this I may not lower it all the way to the ground. Saves me an extra bend down move to leave it a little higher. Plus it’s easier to stack multiple small ones on if it’s slightly raised. I’m using one of these timber claws again. Used them years ago then stopped using them with the other splitter that used a tong lift, didn’t need them anymore. With this regular lift they work very well again. Big monsters I’ll roll on tho.
Brought a few more logs out Feb 23rd. Cut em up and then the big thaw came, mud season. A quick refreeze of the mud and I got back at it. A little more in the pen. Warm out but the mud was dry enough to get a few more logs out. And I bought a new 550xp. Used, one year old, $450. A little pricey but it’s in showroom condition, or was. Had to get it dirty. Went out late afternoon to put the splitter in the barn before the big rains. Last minute I drove to the processing area and finished splitting the last pile. No phone with me, no pics of the pen
Had some rain of almost biblical proportions last night. Mud season is back. Took a walk, remembered my phone. It’ll be awhile before I get back in there again.
Yeah good rain here too. River load in the ravine below. 2-3" in the wheelbarrow. Yard not too bad. Assembling some bundles later.
Finished the pile of logs in the front lawn. Thee were quite a few ash logs in that pile, I knew a few but some were camouflaged. Seem to have taken the tannin from the BL and dyed themselves Most are in the woods, saved a few that seemed half decent. Starting on the next pile.
Looking good Joe. Do the splits have their own distinct thud when the land in the bin? Music to my ears. Are you going to sell any of that next year?
With my hearing I don’t hear much. Occasionally an avalanche is about it I have 2-2.5 cords left from 3 years ago. I’d sell it if I had a buyer. So far I’ve only sold one cord of BL. No aficionados in my area. I’m a firm believer in letting split locust sit. Burned some four year old stuff this winter. Was able to light it without kindling and just a couple fatwood sticks. Seems to burn better with more age in it. I have no problem keeping this for personal use. You finding any?
The mania is gone, but I did find some fresh cut at one honey hole. Spied a couple barkless blowovers there I may grab. Im just tired of really having to work to retrieve the stuff. I have a few spots I could get some. I guess older age and the ease at which I get loads of other wood now has changed that.
I did the same on my 2005 Dodge 1500 with 5.7 hemi. I put the expensive NGK iridium plugs in and it ran like crap. Was told on the Dodge forum to replace them with plain old copper core. Sure enough, ran great!
I hear ya, you worked hard for all of it and BL rarely comes easy. It’s great you found an easier way.
Strange how that works out. Just had another issue a couple weeks ago. The new predator engine on my conveyor started but was barely running. Popping and skipping like crazy. Next day the cylinder was flooded so maybe the float was stuck. Did buy a new Champion plug for it from Napa to replace the Chinese plug they come with. Dried out the cylinder, new plug and it fired right up. It’s running smoother than it ever has,,,,,still not as smooth as the Briggs it replaced but better than new.
Thanks Jeff. Coming from the king of White Oak and all,,,, Snapped a pic of where I left off. Time to slide the conveyor back a bit, add some more pallets. For reference those pallets are 10 feet long,,sure look shorter in this pic.
Get an ngk plug for it, it'll purr like a Honda! Even if you don't put it in right away, you'll need a replacement for that champion soon anyways... champion used to be good, pure junk for many years now though.
