Over the weekend it was pretty windy here in CT. I spotted a couple blow downs along the road and needing some fast drying species for next winter’s stash, I got to work. One tulip poplar and a nice straight forest-grown red maple. About 2/3 of a load of red maple today, with plans to start working the tulip poplar later this week too.
Definitely. I know you get both of these species fairly regularly but I haven’t cut much of either since around 2020. Between this score and the dead ash I’ve been hoarding, I should be in no danger of running out next burning season.
If I was scrounging I wouldn't turn my nose up at poplar. Heck here on the property I'll take anything that's easy.
My coworker and I decided to carpool today and cut some of this tulip poplar on the way in. One 8’ log for him to mill and the rounds we’ll split 50/50 for firewood.
Just the one. Between the two of us we were able to flop it end over end out of the mountain laurel, then use the cant hook to get it out of the ditch and onto the road. From there it wasn't too bad to lift one end into the truck, although if we had more than one to do it would've taken another trip. At least we only have to drive them 30 miles back to the commuter lot where I'll take my half home
As guy with a mill who is used to moving big logs. How did you get that log on a pretty nice truck and what is the chassis rating on that truck? Ahh, I reread the post. I am still amazed at your moving and rigging ability. I usually brute force it with the tractor.
Logistics is right! Wood was cut in Middletown, will be brought to the parking lot in Bristol where I take my share another 3 miles home, then my coworker continues on to Canton, another 20 something miles away... That's a lot of work just for tulip poplar too
Well I drove an hour and a half for a load of tulip poplar! More than once. jo191145 was nice enough to run it through his splitter at the halfway mark.
Lots of fun with the flip flop method. Done it many a time alone and a few times with buzz-saw's help. The things we do for mill logs!
Here’s a mop up of this score. There’s more tulip there but I feel like I got my fill at this point. 11 rounds from yesterday and 3 more today, plus 3 splintered rounds of red maple from the base of the trunk. I’ll post more pictures once everything is split/stacked.
