Have not been into the pile in a bit due to winter storms and tons of cleanup to be done. Got back in yesterday and today, and felt good to get back at er. Did you spot the bad wood? Hate running into that in the pile! Putting my little 6 ton yardworks through some abuse: Stay warm!
Didnt spot the bad wood? Those little electric splitters are handy. Used mine a bit today. Mostly for sizing pre split wood for bundles although I did split a face cord of sugar maple with it last year.
Looks like it's almost a lifetime supply of BTU's for most hoarders. Heck, who am I kidding? Hoard on. Started the old splitter with new motor but looks like it needs a bunch of TLC before really putting it to work.
I’ve cut standing white birch that ended up looking like that in the middle. The very top was starting to die, but plenty of leaves still. Salvaged some of the trunk, but a lot went into a brush pile.
This little guffer, there was 10 pieces like that. I'll burn it myself but definetly not going in the customers cord. Yeah white birch is pretty bad for this. Most of our property is white birch and I find it a dangerous tree because it is hard to see the dead limbs and once dead they rot really quick. Also as you mentioned it is common for the top to die while the rest looks healthy, that top ends up coming down alot of times and the rot slowly works its way down.
