I was looking through some of our saw stuff and came across a X-Cut C85 chain. My son bought a few of them for his CS2258. He said, he hasn't used them to much yet but likes them and will keep using them. So that's good. NYH1.
I tried a loop of the husky X it’s definitely a harder metal than Oregon. Not as hard as Stihl. I have a few single loops of various chain I wanted to try hanging around. I buy the Oregon 72CL 100 foot roll and make my own loops. It’s $0.256 a driver and hard to beat the price. I grind it on a Silvey RS II. I have been experimenting lately with brand and grind and different cutters. I’m leaning back to square grind being what suits me best. With time being a major concern. Speed in the cut with square grind—juice is worth the squeeze. I picked up a loop of Hexa at my local Stihl shop. Curious if it holds an edge better than square. Love the durability of round and the speed of the square.
Same here. Im going to buy the chain making tools and buy a roll of it in 3/8lp. Most of my saws are 3/8lp, vintage, and various driver link counts. I use Stihl 23RS on the .325 saws. Some people bring up the stihl chain cost but in my experience, they stay sharper longer and last longer. In fact, comparing a new Oregon chain vs a comparable stihl chain, the cutters were a 1/3 longer on the stihl chain so you start with more usable tooth to begin with. I believe it was 3/8lp I noticed this on. There are pictures somewhere on FHC of it.
I was recently in my saw room looking at my new in the box chains, looking at my lightly used bar and chains on the wall and wondering why I bought new chains. I’m pretty sure I have a few new chains in my truck too. Than there’s the 30+ gallons of bar oil and 14 saws on the floor and bench and it all comes together.
I'll have to buy a roll of Stihl chain. My dealer closed shop so will have to find a new place, or order online. What is the name for the 3/8? 33RS?
It takes two sharpenings before I start to get on with the xcut. Otherwise it's been working well for me.
Guess I was lucky with the X-Cut I picked up. Grabbed a 100' SP83 from HL Supply for $300. After that I got a 100' of the SP33 for the same price as I have a friend who will make them up. Once I saw prices going up to $500, I grabbed another roll of SP83 that's still in the box. Should be good for chain the rest of my life and maybe beyond.
