My Oslo 500 has only done that about 2 times in the 14 years I've had it. Kinda scary aint it. Gets to hot and then you shut down the draft and the far box looks like a nucular bomb just went off in it. Temps rise and then slowly come down all the while that cast iron is tinking and tinking away. After the first time I had a real over fire I raided my wifes tin foil and made a ball of foil that was big enough to plug the main air intake at the back center of the stove to completly plug off all air being sucked into the stove. Only used it once and it worked perfectly. Do you use the ash clean out door and tray? I dont. I let it fill up and never open it or clean out the tray until burn season is over. Any air sneaking in under the fire box through that will always cause an out of control fire. Just my 2 cents worth.

Seems kind off but I have opened the door for about 10 seconds to let the air rush up the chimney

This makes sense and I never would of thought about making a ball to plug off the intake air
