Had an old half cord rack made from pallets that was on its last legs. I had cribbed the ends on it above the sides to make the stack 6' tall as I'm really pressed for space on my postage stamp wood storage area. Replaced it with this. Made from scrounged and reclaimed 2x lumber on 6x6 sleepers. 4' wide, 3' deep, 6'tall and 6'8" high over all. Filling with elm. I had thought of redoing my other racks in the future like this. They are roughly 4.5' high now. It'd be quite the sight for sure.
Good use of recycled materials. Wood on bare ground? Even if PT, I use bricks and blocks to avoid wood on ground. Easier to do when empty.
Good point. Most of the PT I've used is the "old" stuff that was a lot more rot resistant plus it distributes the weight better than bricks/blocks. One of my one cord nugget bins is propped up on blocks. I had scrounged some 24" long cement blocks and used them. The pallet was 4x8 and made entirely of oak. Heavy SOB. If I remember I'll get a pic. And hats off to you for getting it stacked with the hill you have to contend with.
You get around. I'm sure you’ll come across some "brickage" to put your sleepers on. Just a little airspace would help. I always adjust and clean out around racks as they become empty.
The area I just redid over the Summer has tripled up PT 2x8's as sleepers. They were from an old beam on a deck I demoed in 2022 and finally got around to putting them to good use. Again its old school PT so I'm not worried. The other area i made 3x6' rectangles out of PT2x6 with pallets on top. Keeps it off the ground enough and not too far to bend when stacking. I'd consider something different but those are almost always full. stacked. As soon as one empties there's more wood to fill it. As always its a work on progress. Ill be redoing another couple areas later in the Winter as they empty. A couple of one cord nugget bins a part of that. Gonna need lots of reclaimed wood.
That elm looks like some major jigsaw pieces! Should help get the fire going easier though when the time comes...
The rest of the wood in there is elm as well. Two scores back in the Fall and it split rather straight and clean. If some one told me I'd have a cord of elm in the stacks come 2025, i'd've told them they're crazy. Normally I don't take it., but two easy scores of it twisted my arm.
I've burned a little bit of elm, mainly smallish (softball size and under) limb wood rounds so far. But it seemed to burn good, and some seemed to burn fairly 'aggressive' and lots of blueish-purple flame. Since I've got a splitter I don't see a reason to turn it down. And I'd actually like to have some with the built in kindling.
I don't stretch well anymore! Honestly your pallet pens are the perfect storage without stacking IMO.
