The difference being, if I tell my wife the ice was thin she gets mad at me for chancing it. If I tell her it was skinny she shrugs her shoulders and says cute. Kinda like when your off shore and the bilge pump hose gets a crack in it and you don’t notice till it’s almost too late. It’s best to say the day was an adventure and spare the details
It was -13f when I got to the spear house, and -8 when I left about 20 minutes ago. I ended up with a 21.5” walleye that came into the decoy, but bit a small spoon/wax worm combo. Nice by-catch to spearing, and big enough to harvest its cheeks for what we like to call “freshwater scallops.”
Plans are in the works to play hooky from work next Thursday afternoon-evening, with a couple other guys from work and my 13 year old. I haven't been ice fishing since probably 1995 so this'll be fun. The lake we're going to has a ton of pickerel, some kokanee salmon, stocked rainbow trout and plenty of perch and bluegills. I do have one ice fishing pole that was my grandfather's, and my coworker says he has half a dozen tip ups. Gotta capitalize on this cold weather while it's here because we haven't had good ice in several years now.
First time ice fishing today. Never been before. Caught 3 blue gills, buddy only got 2 and they were much smaller. 7” of ice. Fished in a shanty, had some good mice ventilation. It wasn’t cold but it was windy. Used wood borer larvae as bait. We tried a couple different spots, 2nd set of holes had more action.
Picked this one up for the kids. It’s got low miles a good chassis/track/cowl. The guy said it was his daughters, he got her an upgrade and it had sit for a few years. He could get it to run but it would die. I brought my son and told him to limp a little and talk slow but show excitement, got it for 100$. lol Turns out the stator was overheating, got a known good one from a buddy. Just waiting on a crank seal, dosnt look terrible but I’m here and it’s almost 30 years old so seems worth it to me to replace. I’ll replace fuel and oil hoses as well
We stayed out on the ice for about 3 1/2 hours. Not bad for a weeknight. Grilled some burgers and hot dogs on a cheap charcoal grill after dark. Got completely skunked but had a great time.
My wife and I, with two friends, went ice fishing at Lake of the Woods a couple weekends ago. it was -21 Sunday morning but nice and warm in the sleeper shack. Yes, we slept on the ice for 3 nights. The house caught 109 fish. Most were released.
18” of ice holding strong even after a warm week. Nice pictures! Were you out of Arneson’s? It’s been a few years, but I recall they had nice clean houses like that one!
Absolutely! Just being out there with my older son and a couple other guys having a good time was enough for me.
I just picked this auger up off Craigslist for $50. Not a bad price and it was only about a half hour away from home. Now I can go on my own wherever/whenever.
