Any Bird watchers here?

Nothing wrong with any indication of good fortune! We have cardinals to our feeder regularly.

 

We subscribe to that theory as well.

 

Have seen one of these today and another time, maybe yesterday or day before. Picture is not mine but the one i saw is similar coloring.


It hung out long enough today to figure out what it was. Broad Winged Hawk. Only way i could confirm was the yellow spot on its beak. It's all puffed up on a tree branch so a little hard to id.

 

Suppose it could be a Coopers Hawk. I'd guess it's about 20-22" tall, dark/brown back/wings and head, white mottled chest, white belly.

 

I just set up a Birdfy camera. Playing with it now but once I find the best place I will do a share.

Fresh snow shows off the Juncos.

 

I bought a fresh bag of sunflower seed yesterday and didnt get a chance to top off the feeder last night. Birds are giving me dirty looks. Suet is busy. Downy woodpecker and a titmouse. More pics of the Winter wonderland. How much snow did you folks get up there Mike? Maybe 4" here.

About 3 hours of cleanup. A bit more to do.

 

Watched 2 juvenile bald eagles fly in and land on a tree. Hard to get a good picture 50+ yards away. They're the dark spots in the middle, one above the other.

 

One of the adults decided to join them. It's the only one with a white head. Upper right arrow. That's what makes me assume the others are juvenile bald eagles.

Today, Red showed up long enough for pictures.

 

I was able to identify a new-to-me bird call this morning.



I couldn't spot it, but I've been hearing it for a few days.

That's 3 hawks that I know are in my general area: Red Tailed, Red Shoulder, and Broad Wing hawks.

 

Twice in one day I saw a hawk grab a bird below our feeder. The seed in the hopper wasnt leveled and I figured out later the hawk must've grabbed (or tried to) one while on the feeder. Don't want them around but nothing I can do.

Had a crow on the ground the other morning. Grabbing food scraps we throw out. I hear them on occasion but first time I've seen one by the feeder.

 

I found a pile of feathers near my bird feeder today.

 

A rare sight on the suet...flicker. I cant believe a was able to get a pic too. They are rather skittish.

 

We get Flickers here all the time. They like to dominate the suet. I think that sometimes the hang on the feeder, eat, hang some more, poop to make room for more suet then start eating again! Darned piglets! They will also sit out of sight in the trees and cuss me out with their insistent cry when the suet feeder needs filling. I agree they can be quite wary. I can stick my head out the sliding glass door to watch but step out on the deck and they are gone leaving the Chickadees, Juncos, Finches etc. wondering why they left. Around here they are called either Red-shafted Flickers or just Northern Flickers. What variety do you have there?
