I like to soak rusted heads in vinegar for a day or two to remove the rust.

Any particular flavor better than the other?

You can use citric acid for rust removal. It is readily available on places like Amazon. Works great

It can be a really satisfying hobby. I just got a new handle delivered from Whisky River Trading. It is a 32” from their heritage line. I am getting excited to clean up and hang the old Plumb axe head on it.

Mann True American cleaned up. I hated to do it but the USA stamp near the poll got wiped out when I reshaped it. The poor thing was so mushroomed over. Had to scribe a line and reshape the bit as well. It was a 5 pounder to start. IMG_0228.jpeg

I would have done the same thing. I try to save the stamps as much as possible, but at the end of the day, I want a tool that I or someone else can use. Nice work! I am excited to see it with a handle in it.

I’m waiting on some handles. In the meantime I’m going to keep an eye out and look to see if any where local has something decent.
By the way I may or may not have won a Collin’s double bit on eBay earlier….

One of my favorite scores was a Collins double bit cruiser on a nice old handle. I got it at an estate auction. It is a sweet little axe with great balance. IMG_7188.jpeg

I am so going to steal the little tree idea. Patent or not! I have a pile of old barn boards some even have a little “organic matter” on them still.

Simple project. Jigsaw and a drywall screw I think somewhere close to 14” tall…

Are those from House handles? I have had pretty good luck with their handles. I pay the extra for hand selected and no lacquer. For the money, they are really good.

Yep! First time order from them and I’ll buy again. I got the no lacquer option too. The longer curved handle that had the wedges taped to it I had hand picked. The other three were just the better grade standard pick.
I did just get a couple from Beavertooth yesterday. Took a little while for them to ship, but they are pretty nice.

Got a handle on the Vaughan this morning. IMG_0211.jpeg IMG_0239.jpeg

Cleaned up this Collins double too. It came painted red. Someone had engraved their name and maybe an address of some sort in it. IMG_0237.jpeg

    Question for you….
The little double…. What weight and rough dimensions are the head? Been keeping an eye open for something similar for whacking branches when wandering around the woods. I’ve got a little council tool Hudson Bay that works good, but can never have too many options.

I am not sure on the head weight. It is thinner than my other doubles. Maybe around 3 pounds. It measures 8 1/2” from bit to bit and 4 1/4” tall at the bit. The handle measures 27” including the head. The handle is very slender but it still feels good in my hands. image.jpg
