We have those here. They are very common in these parts. They are Abert’s squirrels - or, as everyone around here calls them Albert’s. They get big. Very timid and non-destructive. Pretty cool critters.
I think yours are different Black, red or dead: How Omaha became a hub for black squirrel scholarship
The local veterinary used to have a bunch of black squirrels on one of his farms but I haven’t seen one in several years. A town about 25 miles away used to have a bunch of black squirrels but I am not sure if they still have a colony of them or not.
It's been almost 20 years ago, but the black ones I saw in canada...they looked like our Grey's, but just black...don't remember them having the fancy ears. Iirc, someone up there told me they were the same squirrel we had (grey), but who know if they knew what they were talking about...
Same here, no ear tufts...that is not just a black Grey squirrel, like they are here. (they mix with the reds too...lots of multi colored squirrels running around...kinda funny seeing a black squirrel with a red tail, or vice versa) here...
Oh wow. Might have to mount that little bugger. Or start tanning the hides and make a multi colored squirrel hide coat!
They are everywhere around here...all kinds of different color combos, but the black body/red tail is really common...some of them are kind funny looking, reminds me of a calico cat or something.
