Interesting story . One I've never seen or heard from anyone I've cut with . Much less had happen to me .

I know working in automotive interiors, we have to be very cautious with cold plastic as it is brittle and cracks easy. With your unbelievable low temps, I’m surprised that’s the first time you’ve broken any.

 

Did that happen while running and suck your coverall in? Or while starting?

 

Another vote for plastic that became brittle due to extreme cold. I keep my saws in a garage space that’ll get chilly, but not ambient outside temperature cold.

 

When I cut in the winter, much to my wife’s dismay, two chainsaws and a jug of bar oil sit in the laundry room on a piece of cardboard the night before,,,,,

 

You guessed it . There were a few fins/slats missing from no doubt where the previous owner had had something fall on it or it fell off something. It was about a 1 1/2" square open hole close to the starter handle .
While making a buck with the saw wound up and at waist level . It sucked in the hem of my loose fitting ( it used to fit properly, 90 lbs ago ) sweatshirt.
You can see from the puc how tore up my sweatshirt is there.
It felt like a chunk of wood had got thrown from the bottom of the bar and smacked me in the waist . I looked down and what remains of the starter was all wadded up in my sweatshirt. But the saw was still running . I still had to finish that bucking run . So I did . Knowing that once I shut er down it wasn't going to start again for quite a while
It happened so fast . Milliseconds. And very few .

 

That will really help them . I keep my saws and bar oil in the truck and saw gas outside .
It really wasn't cold at the time . +18°F or so . -7C ish .

 

This is my heated handle and carb 2172. So getting it back to work soon was paramount . I ordered this on e bay . Should be here in a few days .

 

Wow! I hate when I have to do a vinyl siding repair when its below 40. I have to be extra careful so I don't overflex it and snap or crack. I've learned the hard way.

Last week I had to bring a gallon size of bar oil to the cut and it was in the 30's (mild for Alaska I'm sure) so I left it in the foyer the night before.

 

Would never have guessed right. Actually more thing to keep in mind when running the saw so thanks for posting.

 

I had never heard of it happening to anyone else.
But I was showing the pics to the logger I buy my wood from. He had a similar thing happen to a brand new 372 Husky . But , with the waist drawstring on a Carhartt , Arctic Extreme work coat. . Somehow, the end of the drawstring found it's way in through the slat vent holes . ZIP and it busted the starter cover .

 

I'm a Happy guy ! I'll gave warmer hands tomorrow

A couple of my saws had been in my truck overnight during this cold snap (high single digits) and I decided to fire up my 61 to noodle a couple red oak rounds. The recoil didn't even want to... recoil all the way. After a couple minutes of fiddling, pulling it over with only half of the usual length of rope, the saw finally fired up and the recoil retracted all the way. I gave it some extra time to warm up but even so, it didn't want to oil the chain. I'm guessing the oil is like molasses in those temperatures. Next time I'll bring my saws inside overnight, as I really don't mind cutting in those temperatures, but evidently the saw does.

 

No doubt that many on here would blow a gasket at me saying I use crank case drain oil for bar oil. But , used 5/20 , 5/30 and 5/40 still pours and pumps in the cold ! And is affordable. Since bar oil costs almost as much as motor oil . I've reduced my cost by 50% . And I've never found increased wear from winter time cutting . When using bar oil, I keep it in the house overnight then put it by the heater in the truck for the drive to the woods . I drive a 6 pack truck so I have room for my saws and other tools , ratchet straps , cold weather gear , generator , air compressor cords and hoses ect . Inside , out of the snow and ice . And where they can start to warm up some before I have to use them . I just have room in the cab for me and a dog . Plus , it takes the worries out of someone walking off with a saw when at the filling station when there's a 135 lb guardian dog in the cab that hates strangers !!
But I always keep my saw gas in the bed of the truck and don't buy and pour into the saw until it's had time to freeze any water that may be in the fuel from the pump/holding tank or tankers . Let it freeze to the bottom of the jug and shake it out when the jug is empty .

 

One. Easy trick that helps with the saw pumping bar oil in the cold is .
Try to figure things (oil consumption) so the tank / tanks in your saws are empty at quitting time . When you start your saw in the morning or whenever. Let it warm up BEFORE you pour in bar oil . The oil tank in your saw will warm up as the saw warms up . If you pour in warm oil , or at least warmer than solidified molasses. Start the saw and let it idle for a few minutes. The bar oil will pump .

 

Never had an issue using winter weight bar oil
