Mystree Log

This was at my cut today and couldn't ID it. Bark has a white oakish look but its definitely not

 

Black gum again, or maybe even sweetgum? Wood coloration looks about right. I've seen a lot of variation in the bark appearance of those trees too.

 

I know this one! That is 100% a firewood log.

You sure it can’t be white oak?

 

I had mentioned to him it might be gum and he'd find out come time to split it. He was not very good at IDing. He was moving oak for us to cut and told me if any weren't let him know.

 

Looks like gum to me. Try splitting it and that will tell you for sure.

 

Positive. We were cutting oak all day and I can ID even a barkless log as oak either red or white.

 

Chinese Persimmon is my final answer.
