Here's a few pictures of the BL I have my eyes on. It's a similar area that I harvested BL a year or so ago. It's along the route of my morning walk. I took these earlier today.

The 45⁰ish leaners are on the radar.

    Decent size at stump
    IMG_20241202_083220.jpg

There's briars to work around. As well as the usual weed brush that like to hang with BL.

A pic of the upper areas. Some bark is releasing. Some is probably still green.

There's others in the general area.

Additionally, there's at least a dozen 4in branches in the area, that are looking for a nice home.

Not sure when I'll get some trigger time. Recently, my time is spent more and more working with and for my elderly parents. 96/94.

Nice find. I can spot those rather easily now. Looks like a typical BL grove including the thorns and undergrowth that entangle them.

Yes if the rootbal is still attached the tree will usually stay alive for the most part. I've seen them on the ground with shoots growing up perpendicular to the trunk. Bark can take over a year to loosen and 3-5 to completely wash off clean IME. I have areas where I've scrounged blow downs from a May 2018 storm and others from August of 2020 so I have a timeline reference. With its rot resistance its great to be able to leave BL for years before scrounging it. Do you have a good machete?

The chainsaw has gotten me through brush.

There's a border of bamboo that I'll carve away. That'll give me better acces to drop the higher lengths and work back to the stump. Pieces will be ~20ft from the road.

You guys are nuts. Going crazy for a species that has a large amount of bark that is often full of maggots. Seems like a lot af extra work. Sure it has great BTU ratings but is it worth it?
I’ll take oak any day and don’t mind the large stuff that gives you a large amount of bark less splits. Maybe the thrill of the hunt. oak is like fishing in a barrel around here. Can’t miss.

Oak is what I usually burn. BL is just for variety and to increase street cred.

LOCUST MANIA! It's a real thing. Just ask Eric Wanderweg & jo191145

Plus, were wood hoarders. It's a special kind of crazy. I guess you could say I'm an extreme case! :D
