Arctic Blast to Hit 6 States on Thanksgiving With -20 Wind Chill

Temperatures will plunge across the northern Plains beginning on Thanksgiving as the first arctic blast of the season arrives. The frigid temperatures will also remain through the weekend, giving holiday travelers something to contend with as they journey home. Nearly 80 million Americans are expected to travel for Thanksgiving this year, the AAA reported.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Prediction Center on Tuesday warned that temperatures could plunge as much as 40 degrees below zero when factoring in wind chill this weekend.

"The first significant Arctic outbreak of the season will arrive in the northern Plains on Thanksgiving. The cold will advance farther south and east through much of the Plains and Midwest on Friday and persist into this weekend," a key message from the NWS Weather Prediction Center said. "Temperatures are likely to be the coldest since mid-late February in the northern Plains and Midwest, providing an abrupt change from the record, or near-record, warm autumn so far."

Just NW of me this morning it was already -4° air temp. The joys of living in Dakotah Territory. Gonna be a chilly turkey day weekend.

 

The 2024 Thanksgiving weekend will bring a significant Arctic blast to the U.S. heartland, with dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills extending across the northern Plains and upper Midwest. This Arctic outbreak is expected to deliver the coldest conditions since February, lasting through the holiday weekend across the Northern Plains-Midwest and into parts of the South and East. The threat of heavy lake-effect snows across the Great Lakes continues to increase as well.

 

Well that sucks, we are heading to Lusk wy thanksgiving day with our camper. Never done any cold weather camping with it. Temps aren’t looking too terrible so far but there is at least one day of bitter windchill it looks like. I just hope I don’t have to deal with much wind while we’re traveling.

I don't see any dangerous temps in this map. There aren't any negative 30's to negative 50's air temp

 

They may have been referring to negative windchill numbers. Below is a Wind Chill chart for Thanksgiving through Sunday.

 

Just make sure you have plenty of propane. I lived in a 28’ camper while in the oil patch, I can definitely say that at at 2:00am when the propane runs out, rolling up a bit tighter in the blankets doesn’t work when the temps are in the single digits or the wind is blowing.

It seemed like every hitch I ended up trekking to the bulk tank at 2:00am - 3:00am to fill a 20# cylinder because the guys that left couldn’t see fit to fill the empties.

 

The front just got here with some light snow heralding much colder temperatures for the next week.

 

Good thing I grew up in WI before they invented wind chill.

 

The campground we are in fills propane tanks, but the lady said that they were going someplace for thanksgiving and might not get back today. And, of course, I was counting on refilling here. I am very low on LP but if I can make it through tonight we should be golden. 23f at 7:00pm and thankfully no wind. supposed to get down to 18*f tonight and that should be the worst of it while we are here.

 

Got a couple electric heaters with us. So if I have to we can put them in the bedroom and close the door.

 

How'd ya fare?

 

Quite well actually, I think it was around 14*f at 5:30 when I got up. Didn’t run out of LP, and just got the tanks refilled. Wasn’t as low as I thought, frost line on one tank showed it was 1/4 to 1/3 full yet.
