I currently run my hot water off a small bulk tank I cannot get filled again . I'd like to hook up a 100# I already have.It is only for my cooking stove/range. Can I thread the existing regulator to a 100# ? Is the regulator based on the load not the tank size ?

The load a tank can supply is a function of the surface area of the liquid propane and its temperature. The 100# tank has a relatively small surface area.

I realize my initial reply doesn’t directly answer your question. I believe the regulator is sized by the appliances needs, not the tank size. I have a 100# tank that I bought last minute to run a heater at a wedding. It iced in October (at the wedding) and we swapped it out with another tank to keep going. Recently I checked into using it for my shop Modine heater, and decided in the dead of the winter I would have marginal gas supply. Your needs could be much less. There are charts that show ambient temperatures, tank size (and fullness), and BTU available.

I run my house on 100# tank
Had a 250 and 500 gallon house was heated by propane when I purchased the were 2 regulator
One at tank and another with shut off at house.

do yourself a favor get another 100# then you can put them together put in a gauge in line.
Use a 1 tank at a time .. if you run out switch to second tank

It might depend on the WH size (BTU rating/burner size) and how much demand you have (burn length)
