The guy where I cut my "knot for me" score tells me about some wood in front of a house a mile down the street. Checked it out last week but no answer when I rang the bell. buzz-saw messaged me about it too the next day. Tried again yesterday and the lady said help yourself. I had planned for tomorrow but with rain tonight I opted for this afternoon. 4-5 sugar maples and a smaller Norway maple taken down by the town. Dying/diseased judging by the hollow and punky spots. Took mostly the primo wood. Lots of "knot for me" wood there! Sugar maple is HEAVY when green for those FHCers not familiar with it. What's left. I tossed a few extra nuggets in back after I closed what's left of the tailgate. I may go again tomorrow.
Didn't have it with me. Local road not heavily traveled with a good line of sight and I was far enough off the road. I didn't have a hi-vis shirt on either!
Surprised the wood was still there yesterday as I had time to take more. Face cord for this load. Most has been split. Good mix of bundle wood and general cordage splits. Maybe a cord for the score.
For sure. Even the knotty ones I trimmed flush and very few ugly splits from them. I could've bucked a few more from that huge trunk in the second load but about a quarter of the diameter was punk. I'm pleased with the wood that I got out of the score. Fourth time ive run into gnarly sugar maple in less than two months. Always an adventure not knowing what my next score will bring. Need a good BL score...been too long.
Good looking score. Off topic, but is the grey tool box your "saw box"? I have one, always evolving. Interested in what others keep on hand for scrounging.
Yes, my saw box. In the bottom there's a litre bottle of mix and another of bar oil, extra chains, a couple felling wedges and a rag or two. Tray has files, scrench, folding ruler and chalk. Needs a good cleaning. Lots of sawdust finds its way in there.
