On the way home Sunday something possessed me get off the exit before mine and take the back roads home. I then passed this. Sugar maple, mulberry and cherry. Asked the lady. Friend was taking some and I could have the rest. Gnarly knotty trunk not for me. Pried it off and took the rest. IMG_6382.JPG IMG_6383.JPG IMG_6384.JPG Ended up with a good contact through the tree service. They don't want any wood from work they do and will call me if in the area.

Nasty old knotty trunk. What a nightmare that would be! You’d have to block it out w/ noodles down to stove size. Hard pass!

Yeah they're a dime a dozen around here. I have noodled them I the past to make pretty "splits". Some dense wood with great btu's. You ever score any sugar maple Jason? Common tree down there?

That thing would probably saw out beautifully if there is no rot. I don't know who buys them, but I see slabs from stuff like it for sale for real money.

buzz-saw lives right around the corner but getting it there would be the problem. Hard enough for me just to safely pry it off there. The husband did request a cookie from the fat end which I obliged.

Him and I have wrestled logs onto his trailer for milling. Probably an interesting sight to watch.

Not sure that I've had sugar maple before. Definitely see lots around. My parents have 2. Mostly see the big silvers after they've fell/broken or have been taken down. Maple usually doesn't make my wood radar go off. I processed a huge one once that got taken down on my neighbors property when they put public sewer in. That stuff dried in a few short months.

W/no leaves I never realized what flavor maple it was. Milled pretty easy. I borrowed m.lee’s 50” bar for that one and the 394 wasn’t ported. Still have the wood laying around here.. :loco: .

    Nice work!

The Wood Wolverine sugar maple is the highest btu maple, right where oak is, but it seasons quicker than oak.

That looks like the junk I have to call firewood around here. It'll burn but I can totally understand leaving it behind. The rest of it looks good!

Around here, red maple is called swamp maple.

I guess whatever is growing near water, gets called swamp whatever.

Interesting .. I would rather have red maple than silver. Don’t misunderstand red likes wet soils
But next to rivers and streams Silver maple is a predominant species

This stuff milled quicker than oak I've had. The slabs I cut took every available inch from a 50" bar on the csm and it still cut with decent speed. When I get into big HL or oaks, it really slows down the process.
Can anyone confirm ID from the bark pics? Milling maple crotches

The log pictured is silver maple. A lot softer than sugar hence the fast milling.

I can se and that. Silver maple is all over suburban yards, but it seems like it doesn't compete well in uncultivated areas. No idea why that would be, bc they get friggin huge
