I just got he 410-120 and after trying a couple of chains, there is a noticable difference in the sharpening of the gullets.

The right teeth are fine with the gullet being sharpened as it should be.

The left teeth are where the problem lies. The top of the tooth gets sharp but it does not extend down into the gullet very far at all....just kinda touches the top portion of the gullet.

I notice that when adjusting from right to left, the grinding wheel center bottom is centered before the chain as opposed to the right side, the bottom of the wheel is fairly centered over the chain.

    Ideas?

You need to center the clamp. I could show you but I doubt I could explain it.

I looked up your grinder. Its completely different on the clamp. Obviously I realize mine is a hydraulic actuated clamp, but the rest of the clamp different.

Any pics of the front and back of your vise, Dave? I’ve never seen a 410 in person so I’m not directly familiar with it

From some pics I saw on line it looks like the cam lock handle can be removed and possibly repositioned like the gauge knob on ours. Just a guess.

It’s after 8:00pm, it’s my understanding that he is an old guy :BrianK: so he is probably in bed…

He will be back on with an update after his 3:00am whiz … Lol

I figured it was either that or the fact that he doesn’t like his picture taken and he’s getting rid of any incriminating evidence in the vicinity of the back of the grinder vise :BrianK:

I would tend to agree that it sounds like an adjustment of the vice is needed. After viewing some videos, did you change the 10* tilt when going from r-l cutters ?

I thought it was the vise not being centered (sounds reasonable, right?) and waited until I could get into the workshop to try that. I don't think there is a way to adjust the vise at all. I fiddled around with it and can't figure out a way that it could be moved.

Yes, I made sure the angles were correct including the 10 degree L and R tilt.

I did have one chain that I sacrificed by "tap grinding" (slowly, of course, to avoid overheating) by grinding almost down to the witness marks. I hoped this would create a nice sharp gullet but it did now. The R teeth get a good grind including the gullets; the L teeth tops are grinded but the gullets are just "kissed" a little near the top.

The vids I have watched also show the grinding wheel bottom centered before the left hand teeth but those vids manage to get a good gullet grind; that's why I'm thinking I don't have it tweaked in correctly.

I'll reach out to oregon today and let them know what is going on.

I have to correct my terminology. It is the side plate of the tooth that is not getting enough sharpening; I referred to it as the gullet.

I was gifted an economy grinder some years ago. Had a similarly dissapointing experience. Is there a customer service/tech number to call in the manual?

Oregon suggested forgoing the 10 degree down angle tilt. It is cutting much better by practicing that-both sides (R and L) and the sides of both teeth a grinded much better.

The down angle tilt, or in this case-not having the 10 degree down angle tilt is only losing around 5% efficiency of cutting according to oregon. I can live with that instead of having to send the unit back.

And, I'm sure as the learning curve flattens out as the more practiced I become.

Out of 6 chains, I sacrificed one before I called oregon. It'll be used for stumps next to ground level.

    Hopefully it'll be OK.

Were you changing the 10° vise tilt from tilting the chain toward you for right cutters, to tilting the chain away from you for left cutters?

With full disclosure I am not professional with grinding chains. However, my chains are ground without the 10* down angle as that’s how I hand file in the woods. My chains cut absolutely fine for me and I’m somewhat persnickety at these kinds of things. YMMV Agree with huskihl that you probably are not changing the down angle between right and left cutters. Might want to double check that your wheel is centered to the vise too. After getting the basics down you will be grinding like a pro:thumbs:

No pro here either. I grind the same as you. Less moving of gadgetry is better

No great loss skipping the 10deg angle. Sometimes I do it, sometimes not. I have never been able to tell the difference.

For grinding 10 degree vise tilt of the right hand teeth, you push the adjustment know underneath the vise away from you; left teeth and you pull the knob towards yourself.

Oregon uses the phrase "right away" to help you remember.
