    Hi Guys -

Been a while since I've been in here. Hope everyone is doing well.

I was putting a new chain on the old 572 and snapped one of the studs off. I wasn't even very tight, so it must have been on its way out for a while. What is the trick to getting the stud out and a new one put in? Does it screw into the case?

I'll probably just replace both if its not to big a deal to do. Any help is appreciated!!

    Joe

Pretty sure those bar studs go in thru the oil tank and are replaceable. Drain the oil, take a hammer and gently tap on the end of the bar studs (bolts) and drive them into the oil tank. They'll fall into the tank. If you don't have them I'd recommend buying a set of hemostats (long, thin needle nose devices with a locking handle). They're great at fishing out the old bolts and for holding the new bolts in place when you replace them. The bar studs have a square head that fits into a square hole inside the oil tank. If the bolts are out at full length you haven't got the square head in the square hole...lol. It's not a hard process and the hemostats are really useful. Oh, and a good spot light to see what the heck your doing inside the oil tank. Good luck.

Sorry, meant to say if the bolts look short coming out the tank you haven't got the square head lined up to go into the square hole

I didn't even realize from the drawing that they were accessable through the oil tank cap hole. That makes sense now that you mentioned that.

I've never been into a 5 series but w/ all others, as Colonel said, they come out of the oil tank after being tapped from the other side. Then I use really thin wire through the case hole and wrap that around the threads. This will help you get the new one into the hole.

They do make wire just for threading bolts into tight spots. Looks like this:

    Called fish wire.
