NOAA forecast a KP index of five for Friday night, meaning the aurora borealis will become brighter and there is a chance the lights may be more active.

What’s The Best Way To See The Northern Lights?
NOAA encourages viewers to watch from a high vantage point, like a hill, while the optimal time to see the aurora borealis is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. in areas with little to no light pollution.

A section of the northern U.S. is forecast to have a higher chance of viewing the aurora, including Alaska and northern sections of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Several other states have a lower likelihood of seeing the northern lights, including Montana, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.

My BIL sent us these. He’s only about 15 minutes away but we only had a slight red hue to the sky.

I went out a couple of times and just one time there was a very, very faint red hue to the sky. Clear skies, bright moon.
Other people in the area got some really nice shots, so I guess I should have gone out more often.
I've seen them in the past here, about 25 years or so ago. Something one really needs to see at least once.

We saw them better here a couple months ago...definitely never thought I'd ever seem them in VA. And definitely worth seeing. It's amazing what the phone camera can pick up that the eye has no idea is there, or just the slightest hint of something.....

    Right….
When people see just the slightest hint of red, or any color really. Take a couple pictures with your phone and you’ll be amazed.
I’ve seen the lights quite a few times but had always been disappointed because I never seen the bright colors and such like you see in the postcards and calendars. Usually just a brighter sky often with steaks and curtain looking or veils of light sometimes a hint of green or red. Then about 3 years ago I learned/realized that the camera is doing a lot of the work by picking up the colors and things that your eyes can’t.
I wish I had known about the camera thing about twenty some years ago. There was a super show with brilliant red (even to the naked eye) huge bright beams and a pretty much full moon. The most amazing natural wonder that I’ve ever seen. I understand that display was impressive even through Oklahoma and into Texas
