Getting to be that time of year... Here's some good reading on frost and freeze protection to get those last few vegetables and fruits from your gardens. http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/85-116.htm Does anyone here do anything to prolong the growing season?
Huskies do well here. They are always my must have tomato plant. They also aren't too sweet so I can use them in various dishes.
Other years, yes. This year, no. The weather has been bad. I am so unmotivated to do much with the garden. This is the first year I have ever had the "stick it in the ground and let it go" mentality. I have cooked out only 2 or 3 times. Just an overall bummer.
Boy do I know how that feels! It hardly stayed warm enough to ripen the tomatoes and the ones that did ripen were covered with black spot. About week ago I decided to pull them off while the shoulders were still yellow and let them finish on the patio table. Seems to be working. Wish I would have thought of that in early August when they were rotting on the vine and going to the chickens.
That was what I went out to the garden for, Needed veggies for a pot of moose stew Was delicious too !
Wow, I haven't been out yet. Didn't have a garden, just many very large urns and hanging pots. Did't attempt covering any. Mother natures gets her way when it comes to weather.
I will be picking the "Liberty" apples today. I think they are ripe, last years' lot was almost too ripe, had to eat them up/process them quickly. They are the only variety I can grow, as I have so many cedars around me. I'll try to get picture.
What state are you from? FINALLY THIS WEEK...warm sunny dry weather!!! I have a couple tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and strawberries still out back. The sun has perked them up a bit. I had black spot. BAD. I gave up early fighting the powdery mildew on the squash.
South-Central Pa. Harrisburg area. Yes. It's been beautiful here for the last week and a half. Highs in the 70's but with lows in the 40's the maters aren't very happy. I have most of them picked now. As they ripen, I'm turning them into tomato soup. I have a batch cooking down right now.
I was told that spraying with baking soda and water will fight powdery mildew. I tried it on my roses and it seemed to work until the rain came. I guess it needs to be applied after every rain.
