Well done! Knowing you have an abundance of bundle wood, it should be easy to fill orders like that. Keep 'em happy and calling for more!
I have zero experience in the crab apple smoking wood department but I would think it should be good. This turned up in a quick Google search: You can smoke your favorite foods with crab apple wood because its smoke profile is very similar to apple wood. Chances are you won’t be able to tell the flavor difference between apple and crab apple wood chips. Since it has a fruity and sweet smoke flavor, you can use it to smoke pork, beef, chicken, and sausage.
Most any fruit wood is good for smoking. Although, I don't recall reading anything about banana wood.
Thanks Gary! I split a couple rounds to bundle sized splits. Ill do the same for the rest of it. Ill be going back eventually for the apple he had where I delivered last weekend. Just have to figure what I'll trade for it. Is the limb wood just as good for smoking? A lot of that there too.
Had two quarter cords of mulberry side by side. Moved the drier one for now to free up a rack. (far right in first pic) Processed all the wood from my dump scrounges that was mostly fruit wood and stacked in the empty one for now. Ill figure a new location eventually. I split them to bundle size. Also bagged the nuggets too. Do you sell shorts and nuggets as smoker wood besides bundles? Apple (left) and Bradford pear. Mulberry in front.
I have a couple different options. I started bagging 8" splits this year (16" split cut in half on my miter saw). Smoking woods between 8"-15" automatically are set aside and cut to 8". Small cutoffs from those splits get set aside and also bagged as chunks. I stopped bundling smoker wood. People have been happy with loose stacks of 16" splits and bags.
Sketchy load? Nah. 1/2 cord? You bet. Mix of mostly basswood, some oak and mystery wood. I'll start splitting tonight. Sent from my motorola edge plus 5G UW (2022) using Tapatalk
Mystree wood? Inquiring hoarders wanna know? Nice load. Still have the basswood from my score in August to split. Need shed to empty more before I can bring more in.
I hate retailing bundles. Just got a request to PU some bundles. Told him I don't do pick up, only delivered and offered to meet up. He asked about kindling and wants a box for ten bucks. Turns out he wont buy the minimum ten bundles and only wants one. I said no and wants to meet to buy the kindling. I refused. My friend where I store wood is retiring next year. Maybe I'll convince him to let me have a roadside stand.. Rumor has it that's where the money is!
I got through about 1/3 of the load last night. There was quite a bit more red oak than I expected. I believe there's some black locust as well. I've never worked with any before. The grain looks nothing like honey locust but has the same borer. It's very heavy as well.
I'd be happy to deliver one bundle. Of course it might cost $20 for delivery. My sales have been down for 2 months but yesterday brought in $120. That's a pretty solid day (better than a week for most stands in the US). Yes, there is money to be made in roadside stands.
My bundle sales have been down, although I just restocked the three locals. been in touch with the 100 bundle guy and he still has a bunch. Sept. was okay sales wise. Two bundle orders that I delivered this week and my first cord of black locust have the start of October strong. Have a half cord of hickory and mixed half cord going to a regular next week. Also have a four year old half cord of hickory I'm offering up to a new customer. It got partly uncovered so some may not be good. He isn't fussy.
I mowed last night so I didn't get any splitting done. The more I think about it, I don't think it's BL because the grain doesn't even resemble the honey locust that I usually get. I'll let you get a look and get your expert advice.
I wouldn't know what to do with 4 year old wood! I'd have to get double the usual price for premium aged BTUs! Most of what I process doesn't stick around for more than a year. Yesterday was pretty good for me as well. Loose stacks of oak and hard maple for smoking plus a medium stack of mixed hardwood. $90 for a little less than 1/8 cord and I didn't even have to load it.
The old stuff was in an area of storage I can rarely access due too the ground being too soft due to high water table. I have a bunch of old inventory back there including BL. I pulled a half cord for a delivery yesterday. I haven't brought wood in there in a couple years. I have rounds of white oak and BL back there yet to process. It's been very dry around here as of late so I got in there.
