I found a source for some 6x6 and 8x8 oak for using as blocking. What is the better wood to use? Mostly for if we'd need to block up a tractor or plot combine. Does one splinter out or crack more under compression?

    Doesn’t matter.

The compressive strength is similar in both.

all that the dot requirements were for load blocks.

pretty sure John Deere shipped with oak blocks.

I would probably use white oak if I had the choice, more dense and doesn't split as easy

White oak will stand up to the weather much better.

Go with what they used on the U.S.S Constitution, White Oak. Them fellers were smart.

Ash is a good choice even

I had deck boards for the outriggers made out of elm.
