We’ll call this one: “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good….”

Both of these trees fell on their own and fortunately, did not damage our shed up back; AKA- “The Mini Barn”.

    Hemlock:

It broke off at the very base of the tree:

I wanted to cut this shorter than the typical 18” rounds I cut using the bar on the ol’ MS250. Here’s my measuring rig:

    Here’s the Beech:

    And everything all cut up:

Some of the Beech may be salvageable. I already have a good supply of wood, but I also hate to waste anything burnable. I may be borrowing a splitter from a neighbor and could potentially see how some of the Beech rounds do once split up.

That's pretty much what I have always gotten for beech. Dead standing just a little too long.
I have one beech tree in the back yard that has the beech tree disease nematode. I'm tempted to cut it down now while the wood is still good.

Got lucky on those two. Too bad about the beech. It doesn't have a good shelf life.

Are the beeches in VT succumbing to the diseases?

Unfortunately they are Brad. A lot of them in VT get something on/in the bark that makes the surface of the tree look really rough. Plus, there’s that new variant they have to contend with; whatever it is that gets to the leaves.
