    I want this tree gone…

how would you take it down.

my thinking is toss a rope, pull it away from the building.

All I have for pulling is a 5800lb pickup and a 6000 lb skidsteer.

rig it 2:1 ? Straight pull?

Know anyone with a man lift? That way you could take it down from the top. Obviously that could be a more expensive way to get it down.

just the local equipment rental place. They have both a Z-lift and a boom lift.

Looks like a mulberry. Is that correct? How high are you able to get the rope? More or less 3/4 of the way up the tree? What DBH is the tree? Are you able to pull the tree straight away from the building or needing to fell at an angle? I can’t really tell from the pics. How comfortable are you making a bore cut for the back cut?

Let me start by asking, "DBH"?

I'll have to measure it later

Looks like a mulberry. Is that correct? yes, for the most part, this entire tree line is mulberry.

How high are you able to get the rope? More or less 3/4 of the way up the tree? About 2/3 of the way up.

What DBH is the tree? not at the farm at the moment. I'll have it by the end of the day. It's in the 14-16" area though.

Are you able to pull the tree straight away from the building or needing to fell at an angle? I can’t really tell from the pics. There is a line of trees to the side of the quonset. I can pull straight through, but the tree will hang up. I would need it to fall 90 degrees to the lean to not hang up or hit the building

How comfortable are you making a bore cut for the back cut? about the only part of this thing I am comfortable doing.

I want to eventually remove the quonset entirely and replace it with a polebarn with 16' walls. I may wait to take it down then. I want the branches off the building as it is right now as the shed project might be a couple years down the road. Which would lean towards a man-lift being the answer, at which point I may as well take it from the top down.

Definitely sounds like you want to take it down in small pieces from a man lift. Felling 90 degrees to the lean is the worst case scenario for hinge integrity.

Farmer J the safe way would be piece it down from the top with a lift and once you get the top back you would be able to get a rope up high to pull the trunk over and the advantage of the lift would also be that you could trim any other trees from your proposed building area I have pulled many trees over with just a pickup but getting the rope high enough to give the most leverage is the key once the tree starts to go it would make a lot of unwanted damage to the rest of the trees in that area if it did not hang up you will have much more trimming and clean up work . Judging this from a picture is not as easy as being there to see all the variables but the heavy part of the trunk does not look high enough to tie the rope and tying off to the smaller stems is risky on a hard pull
Be careful and be safe JB

90° is a risky pull. Enough of a butt clincher pulling straight out.

I’ve got a couple of Swiss saws that would likely be just as quick…

my son in law was telling me he’s got a mount for the go pro to fit on my culturing helmet.
