Tire Life on a Hydro

One tire was completely flat on the hydro today. Kind of a PITA to blow it up but I got it done. I noticed cracking in the tire once inflated. The machine was three years old in June. What's been your experience with tires on a "generic" box store hydro FHC? Thinking I may have to replace them within the next year. The machine is stored out doors under a tarp.

 

Tire quality is for chit! They put the cheapest crap on that they can.

 

Those lil 4.80x8 tires are all pretty cheap, and I guarantee that the ones on a chinees built splitter will not be anything special!
They're all over ebay for $50/pair/shipped...order new and keep on keepin on...
(you might make sure to get 6 ply...I doubt the ones you have now were, probably 4)

 

Mine is three years old and one of the tires leaks down in a few weeks. I can only imagine how cheap the tires are that it came with.

 

If I never towed mine down the road, I’d just assume find solid rubber wheels for it.

 

I’ve towed mine around a bit. Tires are still in fine condition. It’s a Made In USA Huskee that I got probably 2012ish (used).

 

Whats this hydro you speak of?

 

This is probably closest to what I was thinking. Flea-bay or Scam-azon is probably the best bet.

 

You can get them filled with styrofoam or find some solid rubber tires as Eric said.

My splitter is 3-4 years old, towed around on gravel roads & sits in an open front shed. I haven’t had any issues with my tires, yet.

 

Not sure but I think there is the occasional tow with the truck to do some splitting off site. If this was or is the case I would probably not want a solid tire. Guessing my splitter is probably about 5-6 years old and no issues. Mine does not sit out in the elements so if anything, that helps.

Looks like tires are about $60 a pair and wheel and tire assy. are about $70 each; this was Amazon.

 

Further "investigation", through reading the whole thread, leads me to believe its a log splitter. Never heard them referred to as "hydro" as they pretty much all are hydro unless its an axe, or maul or the kinetic type. The latter not being that popular.

Do you hand split your firewood?

 

I don't split anything. I noodle if necessary but its usually not as I'm only a camp fire wood user.

 

ccp rubber is the absolute worst. I know it by smell alone. It's as much a plastic as it is a rubber in my estimation. The tires on my Forest King are still good somehow, but if they go, I'm putting foam or solid on it more than likely.

 

My old splitter was probably on the North side of 15 years , sold it to a coworker when I got my new one. Tires still have no issues.

 

Like the cheap plastic/rubber smell that hits you in the face when you go into a Harbor Fright Store. That place has a stink all it's own.
