The last delivery of freebie tree service wood has a big Katsura tree log just wondering if anybody has ever burned it ? I will try to get a better picture today but it is bigger log in the front of this pile the small log is hickory
Personally I’d mill it or find someone to mill it for you. It’s very rot resistant and pretty durable. It’s also highly desirable for its aromatic properties. It smells very sweet to me kind of like a fruit wood. Though my firewood experience with it is limited, I have several clients with Katsura trees, and I work on them somewhat frequently. It’s going to be slightly more dense than black walnut. Solid middle of the pack performer, but I still say with nice straight logs like that it would be better served as high quality hardwood lumber.
I think it isn't great firewood but is very good for woodworking and furniture making. More info here: Not Krazy About the Katsura, but i'll Take the Rest.
buZZsaw BRAD gave me some to burn last year, and I thew a couple pieces in the stove on an established coal bed. It was… unremarkable. It lit easily, but didn’t last too long. It’s the type of thing I would take if was convenient, I had plenty of room, but wouldn’t take it in large quantities.
Was it dry enough? It was last September I cut it. Some is buried in the bundle wood shed to be used by years end if all goes well. I happened upon a split recently and it wasn't very heavy. My opinion is its average btu's. Still have a log at buzz-saw's to mill.
I burned it as shoulder season wood in April IIRC. You know, I never actually measured the MC I knocked a couple pieces together and they sounded dry. I know there was no wood snot boiling out of the ends, so it must've been dry enough anyway...
Well if it is like black walnut I may as well give it to my customer who took over sawmilling for me as black walnut is a very lame firewood to me it is not worth the effort . The btu charts say black walnut is good but I have never been overly impressed with it . I also have been spoiled with more oak, and locust over the years but I would rather burn poplar than walnut . Thanks for the input on it if my customer does not want it it will go in the shop stove it eats anything anyway and never complains JB
I have a nice big one here Brad and I will gladly load it for you and I won't even ask for a donation check !!!! It would be one hell of a ride for you though !! JB
BRAD dropped a log off here to mill a while back. Just haven't had time to mill it and see what is inside. Hope to do some milling soon since the weather is finally turning around, and the extreme heat should be gone.
It’s very average middle of the road firewood similar in density to black walnut. It’s definitely more prized as a wood working product. Resistant to rot and stable with minimal shrink. Your saw milling customer should give it a shot. Good luck with it.
It’s worth your time but for the record it looks nothing like black walnut. It just has a similar weight and density. Hopefully, I didn’t mislead anyone there…
Not here anyway. I like the idea of just milling something different. This will be a first on the mill for me.
Agree 100%. I burn it on occasion and my wife hates it. Every time I open the wood stove door, it fills her house with an ultra fine dust. It floats everywhere!
Sounds like highly valuable wood perhaps we sell it on Facebook for 1000 dollars my finders fee can go into the wheelbarrow walls
Moving some wood today and came across a few katsura splits. These were CSS a year ago and seemed lighter than I expected. Comparable to red maple weight when dry IMO.
