Need a wood ID. It was definitely Ash but normally my ash splits as soon as my splitter touches it, and splits cleanly. This stuff was stringy on the inside and kinda heavy. Pretty sure it was ash because it had the EAB tracks in it. What is it?

Need a pic, but I've had ash that was on par with elm before!

I, too, have had Ash that was very stringy and tough, but it’s usually very nice to split.

Sounds like the green (species) ash I've come across, as opposed to white ash. Denser and more stringy.

    Yes, denser too.

    It's gotta be green ash.

My guess is its green (variety, not fresh cut) ash. It seems to be denser and stringier based on my experience. Any bark pics of it cezar?

I've run across some ash that splits if ya look at it funny and some ash that fights you every split. Great wood

Yep. I've processed a lot of ash that was as stringy as elm.

I'm so going to miss the white ash once it's gone. It is THE perfect firewood. Great BTU. Straight grain. Splits with the lightest touch. Bark just vanishes. Seasons in no time at all.

What on earth are the Louisville Slugger folks going to do???

I have a gigantic one in my backyard that I'm sadly going to take down this spring. Probably a solid 2 cords in it. I'll pour one out for it.

That's all well and good until another container ship from China unleashes exotic aluminum borer insects, wiping out the bat supply :)

Sometimes small hickory looks like ash to me

As someone who barbeques a lot I would KILL to have a hickory tree but I've never seen one on my land.

Do have a few nice black walnuts. I've been dreaming about redoing my main floor in black walnut heartwood. Can't even imagine what that would cost if you have to buy the lumber.

That would look unique for sure. The only downside is that black walnut lumber is very soft. I think you’d constantly have to sand and refinish it.

I never knew there were both white and green ash. That would explain why, as others mention, sometimes ash is great to split and sometimes it's a pain.
