The first time I saw them in real life was here several years ago. I was driving by a pasture that was partially flooded, reminded me of 4 awkward guys standing together on the sidelines at a school dance.

Canadian border VT definitely a herron and not a crane . You won't be able to get that close to it before it takes off.
The herron wouldn't taste good. Due to what they eat, fish and such. But I get it. I've been thinking of making a Koi pond, that would wind up being a Labrador pond too, whether we like it or not. So I'd have to plan for that.

A guy from Wisconsin that I used to work with called those blue herons "1/2 milers".

    Why's that?

Cause they chit for a half mile when they take off!

Us construction workers have feelings too. But we know they don't matter. I was gonna say 4 Pennsylvania road department workers...

My wife and I went and toured a brand new Mormon Temple just built very close to our house. They haven't dedicated it yet so it's open to the public for a few weeks for tours. Beautiful architecture and construction. Wish we could have taken photos inside. IMG_20240827_184035924_HDR.jpg IMG_20240827_184356212_HDR.jpg

That's what my dad called them. Was a while before I knew them by what they really were.

I bet that building cost a lot. Nice they could afford such a structure. Around here, many churches are up for sale due to shrinking congregations. A nice one in Augusta was recently offered for a homeless shelter, but the NIMBYs objected and the city caved to their objections.
