A coworker friend secured this score from Facebook Marketplace this week. Lots of white oak, red oak, and a little red maple thrown in. A recent storm dropped one of the trees on the homeowner’s roof, so he had a bunch taken down that were close to the house. I was only interested in the white oak. Being about 45-50 minutes from home, normally I wouldn’t go that far but my coworker offered to let me stage it at his place and get it at my leisure. The Husky 61 and XS Stihl 029 did the cutting, and I busted the rounds apart with my coworker’s X27 knockoff maul.

A sampling of what was there when I arrived (pictures don’t do it justice) :

The last load I left light on purpose, since I’m driving it over 30 something miles home tonight.

Saweet! Kinda overwhelming huh? Seeing how nice that is I'd be taking some too.

How much you thinking of taking?

I did feel a bit bad for the homeowner. Early 30s, no saw, homebody office type without the means to clear this mess. I’m happy enough with the 3 loads I got, especially since space is limited until I start burning again. If it was closer I’d do another afternoon there and get 3 more loads. Vince took 9 huge pickup loads from that guy, and took delivery on a white oak from Chipdrop this week too, so he’ll be busy for a while :D

Awesome score! White oak is my primary Benjamin supplier when selling firewood. It is an all around great firewood and worth driving miles and miles for.

I went up to my coworker’s house yesterday (close to the Massachusetts border) and grabbed a load of this white oak, then went to pick up a chainsaw in North Haven (not too far from Long Island Sound) then went to work, then got it back home last night. It had to be 100 or so miles :picard: BUT…. White oak  There’s still one more load to bring home from up north.

Missed the original posting, heck of a premium wood score! That’ll be a pleasure to burn when the time comes. You need a little utility trailer to travel that far though, imo. Hoard on!! :dex:

100% agree on the trailer. I have one I bought a couple years ago but other projects have taken priority in the meantime. Whether it’s for hauling firewood or for dump runs, I’m going to need to get it going at some point.

Thanks Scotty. I sure wish I got more of it, but I’ll take any amount I can get. For all around use it’s probably my favorite.

The staging area here at home is quickly filling up with plenty of white/red oak, to be processed in the cooler weather this fall. I’m really liking this new approach I adopted of accumulating inventory first then splitting/stacking when a convenient time comes.

Nice Eric. Great wood , probably my favorite.
White oak makes great firewood , smoker wood and boards from the mill.
I would be all over that myself

I hoard that way. Get while the getting is good, then when it's cooler out, process the rest of the way. Part of it for me is the fact that I need to wait for more room in the stacks to open up after moving it into the basement to burn.
Nice clean chunks of WO there. The only negative is the messy bark when splitting.

I may have taken some inspiration from you with this approach :emb: In a lot of ways it makes more sense than to process all of these little scores immediately and rush to get it all stacked.

Earlier this week the homeowner reached out to my coworker asking if we’d PLEASE come back to take more. Feeling a little sympathy for him we both obliged this morning. I brought my 61 wearing the 24” Tsumura bar and the newly acquired 455 that I bought from buzz-saw. The saw ran flawlessly :handshake: Today I focused on a single 2’ diameter red oak log and my coworker Vince pounced on a bunch of dead white oak.
    1st load:
    IMG_4220.jpeg
2nd load which was just a quick mop up of the last of this red oak log:
    IMG_4222.jpeg
Vince had already taken over a dozen loads out in the last 2 weeks, and wasn’t planning on ever going back after today, so…..
