As old chestnut was killed, another found

My brother met a portable miller at the farm to mill the chestnut that died just before our big harvest. (Just sent my tax check in for that - it sucked)
He was walking about and found another one we weren’t aware off. He has been working n a quest to discover more. We are both pleased at it is likely our forester grandfather who planted them .

he was in college in the twenties, right when the death of American Chestnut was occurring. His likely motivation for tryin* to reestablish them

 

That’s awesome! Nice to see his family valuing the things that he cared so much for

 

I would love to find some of these to plant in my area.

American chestnuts, Dunstan hybrids (which are well over 75% Chinese, very little American genetics) or some other kind? I grow American and Chinese chestnuts from seed every year. The OP's trees look Chinese to me.

 

I would be most interested in the American Chestnut…even knowing the risks of infection.

The one in my mom's yard is having chestnuts again this year.
Pretty sure dad planted two of these next to each other 60 years ago.
One didn't survive the drought 10 or so years ago.

 

If that's an American Chestnut, is there any chance you can drench it with something like phosphorus acid (Reliant makes it) which I think strengthens/triggers the trees immune system?
