Talking with my daughter in laws cousin who has become a good friend of mine over the 4th of July weekend, and he said a guy he know set up a portable mill on the job site and has a bunch of bundles of slab wood, sells them for $20. Told him to let me know next time he goes over to the logging site, I’m interested in getting some. Yesterday afternoon, he pulls up to my house with an implement trailer loaded with two giant bundles of slab wood! Helps me unload them and said no charge, the logger just wants to get rid of them! I did give him some gas money and a couple cold beers as it was 90 degrees and humid. I calculate well over a cord, all Red oak and Hickory. Good surprise, good friend.
It pays to talk firewood. Never know what you'll get. Some good stuff there. Sounds like a good connection. Time to get and maybe some
Quite a few times I’ve seen bundles of slab wood near me for dirt cheap. Not quite $20 cheap but very affordable. Heck of a bargain for that load. Be cool if you could get that on the regular.
Wow, so I see it is a month since I posted this thread. Finally got it all cut to length, split some pieces and stacked today. Between not working much in terrible hot humid weather, getting firewood at the pallet mill, other chores and having some fun on the river kayaking and fishing, it took that long. It came out to exactly 1 cord. I'm now officially 3 years ahead.
Congrats on getting to the three year plan. Some nicely done stacks there. Now to work on the five year plan!
5 year plan would be great, but don't really have the room for 2 more years of wood at the house, however....I've been thinking of cutting some trees on my property and splitting/stacking where they fall in the woods, and retrieving later. Plus, I did not count some of my wood shed "insurance" firewood, which will not be touched until desperate times!!
