I got a hostage situation. The tractor is parked on or near a yellow jacket nest and they are swarming the Kubota. Fixin to hose her down so I can finish the wood migration.

Oh no! Is the machine running? This happened to me last year while chipping. I picked up some brush to run through the chipper and didn’t notice the nest. Had to run for cover with the machine running, took an hour before I dared to venture back to turn off the machine.

No it was not running. I went to get on the machine and noticed the yellow jackets attacking the steering wheel, lever, seat and hoses. The black flag cleared them out so I could move the tractor out of the danger zone.

Did some bush hogging of our field. The taller stuff I couldn’t cut last summer due to it being too wet. Where the saplings are there are still stumps to pull. The shorter stuff is the pasture mix seed planted this spring.

Washed the Bush hog to put it away, tractor will get a wash tomorrow.

Busy day yesterday, started the day with splitting 2 or so cord of poplar from the 9 trees we dropped in the front yard. Finished the pile of shorts and uglies as well. Need to put the rock bucket on the tractor and move the poplar out of my woods road now.
    IMG_4985.jpeg IMG_4986.jpeg

Spent the part of the afternoon grinding 10 stumps at the back edge of the new field.

Thanks, it’s a 28 ton Compact Commercial. It’s been a game changer for a one man operation, the 6.5 second cycle time, auto cycle valve, and log lift have made my life way easier!

Moved the pile of poplar out of the woods road. The rock bucket is the best tool for doing such a task. Made quick work of it, 20 minutes or so to move it.

Started on the 8’ orchard fence project. Hooked up the auger to the mini ex, and augered the four corner posts. Took longer to paddle to each corner than to auger the 4’ deep hole. Got the corner posts installed, backfilled, then did the layout of one side. Spent the rest of the afternoon augering 24 post holes on one side. Tomorrow morning I’ll install the posts.

If you look closely you can see 3 corner posts.

couple questions if you don’t mind?

8’ is because of deer? Will it be electrified? What’s the area size?

How do you decide when to grind stumps vs. rip them out?

8’ high to keep the deer out. It will not be electrified at first. It will be a woven plastic mesh fabric that’s supposed to withstand pressure from deer. I can add a string of electric wire after if needed. The area inside the fence for the first phase is 1.75 acres.

In the field I’ve ripped out all of the stumps, except for the once close to the edges within the roots of the tree line I want to save. Just ground 5 maple and oak stumps that were within 10’ of the maple trees at the edge of the field. In the yard if it’s near a tree I will grind it, otherwise it gets dug up. On our miles of woods trails I just grind them flush, and will probably end up removing them in many years when they have rotted or frost lifts them up.

Today’s progress, not as exciting, but got the 24 posts in and backfilled by mid afternoon right before the rain. Planned on doing layout and augering the holes on the next line, but my helper(wife) suggest I be nice to my body. She drove the tractor and shoveled while I compacted the backfill. I’ll do layout and auger the next line tomorrow, set the poles as well. Backfill will be the following day.

Looks great. Are you using cedar for the posts?

Yes 12’ cedar posts were about a quarter of the price of 6”x6” pt posts. They should last 15-20 yrs up here based on the cow fence posts lifespan.
