A skid of pellets I am pretty sure are 4 ft High and 4 ft wide aprox. So would a 12x12 outdoor tarp cover the skid?

Seems right to me, although I would probably get a 15x15 or 20x20 - just because whenever I've needed a tarp, the one's I have are always just shy of what I need.

I bought actually pallet covers from amazon last year. I would triple cover them. I would restock and use factory cover, then a pallet cover, finally another tarp over everything.

my delivered pallets come with a full cover then it is shrink wrapped so 1 tarp would be triple protection. think a 12/16 tarp should do it.. bottom of the skid is couple inches of wood.

I purchase from Chicago Canvas and Supply.
They offer sales in the late summer.
A 12 ft. x 12 ft. tarp covers one pallet nicely.
A 12 ft. x 16 ft. tarp covers two pallets, side by side nicely.
A 16 oz canvas is heavy enough that the wind does not blow
it off. I do also place a few bricks on the top of the pallet of
    wood pellets.
Best not to allow any part of the canvas to touch the ground,
so that the canvas lasts longer. It is the microbes of the ground
plus water that rots the canvas.

If bags of wood pellet are kept dry while stored outside, the pellets will
    last ten or more years.

btw.... before I put the tarp on, I put a small soccer ball in the center of the pallet..
this way the tarp is slanted downward in the middle to stop any rain water from pooling at the top.
