Well after getting my first saw a couple weeks ago I just saw this deal at the flea market and got this STIHL 310 with the case for $250. It starts up on the first pull and looks like a little bit of use but not much. But did I get a good deal? Also how is this saw? As it’s only my second saw I’m not sure what to expect. Yes it appears the CAD is starting I bought an echo 4910 2 weeks or so ago then I saw the deal on this 310 and saw it is a bigger saw at 59cc and I’ve been wanting a bigger one so i decided to pull the trigger on it lol
Congratulations on #2. I don't have any experience with this particular model, but on paper it looks decent anyway: Model Profile: MS 310 As far as CAD goes, the only thing I would caution against is owning more than one in the same CC class. Of course there are exceptions, and just because 2 saws have a similar CC engine, absolutely does not mean they'll perform the same. IMHO money spent on duplicates could better be spent on saws you really want/need.
Sounds like a decent deal based on what I've seen. If there is little to no wear on the bar paint then the hours are very low. The 310 is 59cc and a good firewood saw. Can handle a 20" bar. Along with your Echo wearing a 16" bar I think our have a good two saw plan. For many years the only saw I owned was an MS290 which is a step below the 310 at 56cc's. Very reliable farm/ranch level saw. Cant say anything bad about it. Sounds like you've caught CAD which is okay. That's what we're here for!
I’ll have to take a picture later but there’s a decent little bit of wear on the bar but nothing too crazy. Also the 310 came with the 20” bar which is cool but actually my echo also came with a 20” bar on it. Should I put a smaller bar on it ya think? Also thanks for the good news on I got a decent saw!
Even though I have a bunch of saws, I run a 16" on my 50cc saws and 20" on the bigger ones. Mostly bring two saws on a cut. 20" bar will cut some decent sized logs. I tried a 20" on my 290 (came with a 16") and it worked buried in big wood but it seemed under powered for its CC size. That's a generally accepted consensus for the 290 which ive since learned. Dont know about a 310. I have never run a 310 and your results may vary. Im the type of cutter who doesn't like more bar than needed. Some guys like a longer bar as it saves their back as its less bending if limbing. A lot of my cutting is done in tangles and uneven terrain so a longer bar is too clumsy for my liking. I prefer to use the bumper spikes when I can. My higher CC saws can run longer bars when the need arises. So to answer your question i see nothing wrong with two different size bars but as your saw herd grows as does your cutting experience you will know best. I don't really like having multiple bars as its more chains to keep on hand and sharpen.
