While out in the Oakland/San Fran area for a couple baseball games with my son, we had the chance to visit Muir Woods which is just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and got to see redwood trees for the first time. Pictures do them zero justice. If you’ve never seen them in person and you’re in this forum, you must go! I now need to head further up north to see the real big boys.
Thats cool. Thanks for sharing Joe. Be a b!tch to process one of those. Sorry, thinking like a hoarder here!
We had a chance to go there a number of years ago. You are correct. Pictures can't capture how impressive those redwoods are. I also recall there being quite a few eucalyptus groves while approaching the Muir area. Our friend said they are highly flammable. Thanks for rekindling some memories.
As I understand it, sequoia are a varietyof redwoods. Sequoia grow thicker, and redwoods grow taller.
Sure, that’s a pretty accurate description. I’d probably classify it the other way around since they are both members of the Sequoioideae family and have Sequoia in their name (Costal Redwood: Sequoia sempervirens and Giant Sequoia: Sequoia giganteum), but that’s picking nits. The Giant Sequoia is considered the largest tree by volume in the world… And that concludes my entry to the FHCipedia
I was just up in that direction myself a few weeks ago on vacation even a little further north (Mendocino). Redwoods are very impressive!
When I was there and got north of the golden gate bridge we headed for the wineries. Spent some time at Big Sur though. It sure is nice that some of the old growth stands of trees have been saved,
iirc, the coastal redwoods are found along the coast and the sequoias are more inland. When we were in LA, A girl I met took me to this little tiny spot up in the mountains ( parking for maybe ten cars) where someone/state/county/town had built this "fishing pier" viewing platform on the side of a mountain amongst the sequoias. You walked out to the end and could look way down to the base of the trees and way up at the tops. I wish I could remember the spot as I've never forgotten it. The view of the forest from that height was impressive. I was there in '72 and again in '78 when driving around in a van with Massachusetts plates drew attention.
Agreed! Very impressive and what really stuck out to me is, there is a giant tree, and right beside it was another, than another. A forest of giants.
More on these giants for those interested… If you click on the 5th image and enlarge it you can see at the bottom of the page what look like ants… those are humans for size comparison! I grew up in this part of the state and have many fond memories of camping in the redwoods with my family growing up. The redwood forest is truly awesome.
Wife, kids and I had the pleasure of visiting Muir Woods. Simply awesome. The smell was unforgettable. Some of the most beautiful scenery on that left coast. Would love to make it back sometime.
