In the front yard of neighbors house next to my cut today. From a good distance i thought maybe chestnut based on catkins, got closer and maybe some type of cherry based on leaves, but then spied the bark and was clueless. What do you think FHC?
For a split second it looked like a chestnut in bloom but it’s definitely not. Looks like it’s something from overseas but I can’t place it. I say let the app users have a go at it.
From the backyard next door and the way the wind blew it i thought it was chestnut. Then took pics when i left. Wondering if neighbor saw the crazy guy taking pics of his trees!
Do they grow "wild" there? First time i recall seeing one here and probably a yard planting based on its location. I may have seen them in bloom before not knowing what it was.
We must be living parallel lives Brad I just spotted one in Chester right now, coming back from the beach with my kids.
Cool! I wonder how long theyll be in bloom? After that i wont be able to spot them unless close to the bark as its rather unmistakable.
Spotted one in my travels today and thought of this thread. Without the blooms i'd never have known. Being the tree nerd I am I had to stop on the way back to take pics!
Sourwood like everyone else said. There's a couple of big ones growing on the top of the ridge at our place. Took these while hunting.
I would've almost brushed that off as a sassafras until I studied the bark a little closer. I zoomed in on the leaves and its definately not a sassy.
One good clue in the winter is they tend to still have those flower "stalks" sticking out, similar to how Poplar seems to keep theirs forever. The fall colors on Sourwood are really pretty too.
I’d like to know what the tree is. I’ve looked at it several times and that ain’t Sourwood bark. The tree is also way too big for Sourwood. The bark is wrong and the canopy structure is wrong for Sourwood. I’m talking about buZZsaw BRAD ’s picture. The bark and size doesn’t jive with the Sourwood I’m familiar with.
Yes the blooms and timing are similar. It’s the bark, trunk size and canopy structure that is off for me. Sourwood bark is dissimilar to your picture and I’ve never seen one with the trunk and canopy size of the one in your latest pic. There could be variations and immigrants I’m unaware of.
