Got a couple nice axes at a garage sale today. Prices were agreeable. I believe the "Made in Sweden" is a Hults Bruk. Now I need to learn the art of hanging a new handle....something I've never done.
Very nice. Youtube has a ton of videos. I'm sure you will get'm looking great. Looking forward to seeing the cleaned up and finished photos.
I used this company to buy a couple handles. Welcome to House Handle Company Decent wood, decent price. If you find better for cheaper let me know, please.
Got them cleaned up a little. Flap disc and wire wheel. The Hults looks to be 3 1/2 lbs according to the stamp on the opposite side of the HB stamp. Now I want to find a straight handle about 26" or so long. Don't want a curved handle like is on the Plumb.
Lots of life left in those heads. The Plumb I found is a double edge with one side being fairly worn. I have not been out and about hunting axe heads for a while. Flea markets, trader days and yard sales seem to be the best hunting grounds here. Ebay has everything, but for a price.
I have a nice 3.5lbs Plumb that needs hung so I ordered two 28 in single bit handles from House Handle Co. They came in today and look great. Good grain orientation, no runout and no lacquer. Not sure how soon I'll get on these but I have what I need now.
Rainy morning here so started on the re handle project. The Hults Bruk had a bigger eye and not quite as symmetrical as the Plumb. When I got the wedge in the Plumb, there were no gaps along the top of the eye, but it wasn't a perfect fit with the Hults. My first time doing this so we'll see if they stay tight. The steel wedge ended up splitting the wood on the first one so I didn't use it on the second. Now for some linseed oil.
I have this Plumb double bit that I'm thinking needs re hung. I believe this to be a cruiser style? It almost looks like it has been hung the opposite way it should be. Will the eye on one of these basically symmetrical doubles be larger on one end to allow the wood wedge to swell the end of the handle?
Not necessarily. Some were made to be reversible. I think they are called reversible or peelers. I just hung one and there was no taper to the eye. It was harder, because I was used to hanging tapered eye axes and I had to remove more material at the top of the handle than I was used to. The reversible allows you to flip the head when the toe gets worn down.
