Decided to make a short pen. This one will be 20 feet long. Math says 7.5 cord, call it 7. When it’s done of course.
This is 18” wood for one customer who’s really fussy about length. Someday I gotta watch him build a fire and find out why LOL
He burns in an open fireplace I built for him around 1990. I call it a hybrid Rumford design. Hits all the important codes of today, uses a standard damper but incorporates the tall and sharply angled sides of a Rumford. Just found out last year he heats his house with it. Crazy but hey whatever,,,,,
I think it’ll season enough for a fireplace next year.
Ground firmed up enough to get in the processing area.

Still good sized. How big was the one from the GTG Joe?

Nice that the mud has subsided some, but more rain on the way! :picard:

Too long. Started in December LOL. Guess you could say I took the winter off. Mostly it was just too wet to get the splitter out there. Buried the thing once, what a mess.

That’s next to finish. It’ll be 28 feet long as usual. It’s about 3/4 done. I left it unfinished to get this one starting to season. It’s fresher wood than the years dead stuff I’m usually splitting up. Plus it allows me to get rid of these fresher scores I have laying around that I couldn’t bring into the field. That’s the game plan anyway.
After that I can get the black locust out of my yard :)

A little more progress today. Nice weather. Had some rounds from a score. I usually like logs but when in Rome. They were 18” so they had to go in this pen. A few were good size so the easiest way to move them is winch them onto the trailer then roll em right onto the splitter.
It’ll be interesting to see how many cords come out of this smaller pen. I’m questioning my math skills :)

That is awesome you can back your trailer right to your splitter then roll from your trailer onto your splitter
    Very nice

Quite the set up! Is that an American wood splitter from New York state? I have a much older & possibly smaller model. Never saw that box wedge on one like mine before. Is that from the factory or did you build it? I bought my splitter new in 1991 & been a terrific machine. I believe it was called the high boy model because it had slightly larger tires on it. 24" cylinder e& 8 hp Honda motor.

Yes it’s an American 25 Super. Designed for speed mostly with a 6-7 second cycle time. Bought it during Covid when you couldn’t find a splitter.
I had the desire to build a box wedge and it was available. Fairly underpowered for a box wedge but I get mostly nice straight logs that split easy.
Honda 390 engine, 22gpm pump but the 4” ram makes speed not power. If I kill it I’ll put a 5” ram on it.
It’s a work in progress,,,thinking about adding shaped tunnels to keep the wood running straighter.

First configuration. It has rear push now so I can drive it right up to the conveyor.

Very nice. Mine is smaller than yours and has a smaller engine so i imagine a box wedge is out. I like your dolly wheels for moving it. I'm almost 62 and its getting harder for me to pick up the tongue and move it myself. Did you build that dolly set up or purchase it? Thanks.

No im going to move back to the one we started at the GTG. Time to get it done and get a cover on it. It’s about 3/4 done already.

Debating in my brain the pens for BL. Thinking I’ll make them even shorter. The idea is empty the pen once you start taking from it. Easier than keeping partial pens covered and frees up room for more.
A couple cords in each house per winter. 6 cord pens. That’s where I’m at at this moment.

Decided to cover shorty. Last years wet weather taught me better to cover than soak all year. Just in time for some heavy rain last night. Hardly attached hope it’s still there this morning :)
Put a strip of rubber 5’x20’ on top to help the tarp not get hole.
No ridge rope for improved air flow. Life’s an experiment.
Had a 10’x20’ laying around. Used that. A little small but now I know what size to buy next time.

on to the next one. Finish up the GTG pen.

Should finish the GTG one pretty quick. Cant believe that was a year ago already.

Cant wait to see the BL pen. Now many loads did he end up bringing you from the recent truck fulls?
