More of a novelty score here. Seldom mentioned but great firewood and rarely grows big enough to be worthwhile to hoard in quantity. Part of my SBH score from last weekend and I thought worthy of its own thread. Went back yesterday. Homeowner had sectioned it up and dragged into a pile of limbs. Backed up to mess and salvaged what I could excavate. A few remnant pieces of the SBH taken too.

Gotta give him an A+ for effort. When your saw gets to dull, revert to an axe. Look closely as those are axe cuts. IMG_5444.JPG IMG_5448.JPG IMG_5449.JPG I was able to cut off the 3' spar too. 201 with 12" bar not your ideal stumping saw.:emb: IMG_5447.JPG IMG_5446.JPG Oh and he was keeping the big SBH rounds. Not for firewood, but landscape timbers.:faint: IMG_5445.JPG

Did he mention how he was going to move/use the rounds for landscaping?

I think you’re looking at a finished project. Should make nice ant mounds in a few more years :)

SBH doesn't hold up that well on the ground, does it?

No it doesn't. Not well at all in contact with the ground.

You are correct. He stood them on end and backfilled with twigs limbs and leaves.
S'pose I could really sweet talk him if I had too. Had I known it was their end result I would've pressed to get back sooner. I honestly thought they'd be untouched and seriously considered taking them.

Hickory in general has a short "shelf life" once cut or down. Off the ground it will last a bit longer.

I scored a hickory blowover that was nearly two years down and it was still solid even though the tree was dead.
    028 vs. a dead Hickory.

That's huge for a Dogwood. Around here they grow tall and skinny looking for some sun under the Ponderosa's and Cedars.
I was following a white Ford pickup today (landscaper) and I had to do a double take. The tailgate looked just like yours. I wish I could have snapped a pic!
