Dropped a big standing dead northern red oak today. It turned out that the trunk was rotten in the center and then got exciting when the tree spun on the stump as it fell. I was well away from the tree when it happened and was glad I was. As you can see this tree is really close to the barn where I store my seasoned wood. But there is a fence in the way so I had to go around.
Glad it got down without issue... Sounded kinda scare for a few minutes with it spinning.... But a good source of BTU's for later.
Yikes that can get scary when they do that! Please tell me the truck wasn't parked there while you were dropping it. If so you are a braver man than I am
Glad all is well nothing damage no one hurt. Good BTU'S right there. Not too bad having to go around when you're driving big blue
Well it did gouge the short leaf pine in the first picture all the way down. I am going to keep an eye on it and if it starts to die I will drop it and get it milled down the road.
Good haul! Having a tree spin on the stump is a scary situation.....Been there twice in my 12 year career, one was a huge beech with a twisted grain trunk. Had a good hinge cut and everthing, but that sucker started spinning as soon as I finished the back cut, even before it started to tilt over! All went well, but it still spooked me! Another one was a willow.....same situation, started to spin even before I got my saw put of the back cut, smashed up my one 041AV Super and bent a nearly new 28 " ES bar.....had to almost totally rebuild that saw after that tree.... Glad it all worked out for those primo BTU'S. And you lived to fight another day!
Got all the rounds busted up to a workable size and got them stacked and ready to be split over the winter. Meanwhile the GF was in the barn running the splitter. I dropped another standing dead red oak a stones throw from the barn, but it has some poison ivy on it so I will let it wilt and clean it off later. I don't get poison ivy but I still really respect it.
