I’m all over the board in trying to decide what to buy to haul ATV/UTV/Z-turn mower on (not all together). I have a 1-ton truck, so not a limitation. I have easy access to a 20’ gooseneck flatbed trailer, so the utility trailer doesn’t need to compete with that. We’ve had an aluminum stock trailer for 20+ years and are thinking we want aluminum. Might want to occasionally go 100 miles down the highway with it, but mostly for 20 mile round trips. Probably no firewood duty due to other options. I’m guessing in the next year or so I’ll need to take over dad’s lawn mowing, and their yard is tight, so I’m leaning towards small, but it is hard to swallow going to one axel and no brakes after years of owning bigger equipment. It would be nice to be able to set a pallet of whatever on it, but most have side rails. I’ve reread this thread: New Utility Trailer Shopping Go small and try not to abuse it? Get a car hauler and back into dad’s? Other suggestions?
Aluminums seem to bring at least a 50% premium. Are you worried about corrosion? Only reason I've ever wanted one is due to the weight reduction (only have a smol pickup), but I wouldn't think it'd matter much to a 1-ton? There is a local Utility trailer builder right in my town so choosing his product was pretty easy. I bought a 6.5x10. Looking back, maybe should have went with 12' length but I bought it specifically to be able to haul my buggy (dimension wise) and 10' is perfect. Again, smol truck and only want to tow as much as I have to if I can help it. You can still get pallets on a utility so long as it has a removable gate/ramp. I had one a while back that was not removable and would not recommend. Other tick is to stack 3 or so pallets to bring the 'floor' up to side rail height. Some of the fancy ones have a side gate for atvs or mowers that may facilitate side loading a skid. Bits of interest for me in a utility trailer...Heavy built ramp, greasable hubs, quality coupler, build quality.
Check out Karavantrailers.com. They have sides and fronts that fold down for loading such things as pallets, etc. Sent from my SM-S536DL using Tapatalk
My old bike shop boss used one like this a lot to buy/sell sport bikes. Also had tracks/pads he put down for transporting his snowmobiles. Very easily movable by hand. I used it a couple times to pick bikes up and move riding mowers. Might serve you well.
I was the OP on that thread. 2 years later I have 0 regrets in the trailer I bought. If I was in your situation I with access to a 20'er I might have considered going to a single axle 12'er, but wouldn't go any smaller.
I was gonna state the same thing as I have before, but since you linked one of the threads that I commented in, I'll just leave this here. New Utility Trailer Shopping
I’ve been looking at one of the “Pro” models they sell at Tractor Supply for just a tick under $2k. Seems like a nice unit.
5x10 at least if not 6x12 with a fold down rear ramp/ gate. Single axle is fine since you have a bigger trailer for bigger jobs.
The Mrs did the trailer shopping and finally bought one. It was one of those cases where my advice was asked and then argued against, then agreed with, then argued against. The pendulum swung across all types suggested above, both new and used. I lost interest in the conversation at some point. In the end she decided on a 5x10, and come home with a 6x10. Looks pretty nice. Thanks for the suggestions and advice!!
Well Flamestead You have proven your wife Is a woman (asked your opinion and then argued) And a good trailer shopper so congratulations What’s weight rating on that?
