From across the pond I thought this ugly tree was a hackberry. As I got closer I saw that it wasn’t, even though it has terrible growth shape,& ugly bark that from a distance also told me hackberry. But when I got closer the bark was definitely not and then I noticed some of last years seeds hanging on that look like a maple seed. Any thoughts?
It is amazing how many different trees you can make syrup from. However, all is not too tasty. I had my first taste of syrup from walnut a few years ago. It was good as a topping for ice cream but not so good on pancakes or waffles.
I agree with the others. I call it Swamp Maple because as stated in other posts they really like damp/wet areas.
Everyone nailed it. That's one of only a handful of trees I take pleasure in cutting down healthy. I can't stand them.
Was assembling bundles yesterday and used some box elder. I think the red heartwood is so cool. Probably the only reason I would cut more.
Its decent shoulder season wood. Ive got rid of all the big ones on my property and just let the deer eat the saplings and stump sprouts.
I don't encounter it often even though it is around here. If the wood was straight and would make decent splits I'd take it again , but it doesn't seem to grow that way.
They spilt easy, dry fast, burn decent (it's light when dry), and they're pretty abundant at least here in the more wet areas like creek banks and springs. They're an ugly tree, they attract Boxelder bugs, and they'll drop 1,000 branches as they seem to grow out of nowhere for no rhyme or reason.
Thanks everyone. Boxelder crossed my mind but it’s not real common around here as far as I know. If’n it was leafed out already , I might have figured it out myself.
