Not enough traffic through here. We have some stacked in a shed that I used at the shop, probably 10 yrs old...lol... I've noticed a few splits missing occasionally...
I pretty much decimated my inventory of 3 1/2 year old red oak in the last couple weeks, selling just under 3 cords. All the dead ash I’ve been bringing home is getting processed and stacked where the oak was. Between these two rows there’s about 3/4 cord so far. I’ll keep packing the rows in there, leaving 2-3” of spacing in between the piles.
I can’t even imagine what 3 cords of 3+ year seasoned red oak would go for around here. It’d be like selling Maine lobster caught this morning. Both make me salivate a little.
Between the handful of people that bought it, all of them were practically salivating when they saw it Everyone is so used to buying fresh cut or marginally dry wood around here. Plus I made sure they all got a few pieces extra thrown in. There was no way I was going to accidentally short anyone. I’m hoping it turns into repeat customers next year.
It sure will. Burners tired of getting burned (sorry for the pun) and finally getting good dry firewood is something they wont forget.
More progress today. If only it was as easy to fill up the shed as it is to empty it I managed to knock out 3 more rows of mostly ash, with a little 4 year old red oak mixed in the front of the middle row: A small stack of mostly cherry with some sassafras thrown in towards the back: Bigtooth aspen stacked right up to the rafters, slated for the next burning season: I have probably 2 cords of rounds left to split and stack, and another 3/4 cord of splits on the ground needing to be stacked. Also a face cord of shorts/nuggets/uglies that’ll get thrown into my beech Holzhausen I’ll be building soon. My splitter has been out of commission for the past month since I broke the choke on it and was procrastinating on fixing it. The parts came in yesterday and early this morning I took the time to get it going again. The race to get as much done as I can before the hot weather creeps in continues.

I’ve been on a serious splitting kick the last couple days trying to get my yard to be less of a disaster. These piles are temporary until I can do some rearranging and make a good long-term area for them. A little black birch with a few splits of super stringy black gum on the bottom: A few splits of tree of heaven (first time score for me): DED elm and EAB ash: These last two pictures are a big mix of ash, red oak, black oak, white oak, and sugar maple. In between the the big row and the splitter are a few half punky splits of sassafras:
The shed is quickly filling up. I’m leaving this space empty since my splitter fits nicely in this spot, out of the weather. This stack is maple, birch, hickory, ash, and a few random pieces of oak: Elm, sugar maple, barkless black locust and black birch: Ash and more barkless black locust: This outside row is mostly white oak with some red thrown in. I plan on getting more oak soon and will stack this higher:
