Hopefully our last cold snap of the year. I'm ready for spring planting.

It’s 50, the high and low for the day. It’s been overcast all day with rain moving in. The house is at 66, but I need it closer to 70, so I just lit up some Hickory in the basement stove.

In Northeast Pennsylvania it is still dipping into the low 30s at night. I probably wouldn't load the stove in the morning if I didn't have over 500 plants started in my basement. Need to keep it above 65 degrees. It's nice to open windows upstairs.
I am at a little less than half of my wood bin. I hope I don't have to bring more in. This time of year I let the bin empty out, so I can clean it up and use it for summer storage. I have oak, ash, black locust and maple going in the stove. 20240118_173244.jpg 20240321_163635.jpg 20240321_163635.jpg

Windy and temps falling to the low teens before they reverse later this morning. Yesterday's rain changed over to snow before the day was done.

Here's a pic I took a few years back. I would keep telling the boss how cold it was when I left for work in the morning. You could tell by his face that he wasn't believing me.

"Why don't you take a picture?"

After I had it developed and brought it in he said something like....."Oh, I never doubted you!" As many lies as he told through that business, you'd think he would be better at it.

I think the coldest I saw at that house was -46 (or there abouts as the thermometer ran out of numbers at -40) and yeah, I did go to work that day too! :headbang: :picard:

Good Morning, 36/60, burning up all my scraps that I had up at the house. I have some wood I can burn but it's 100ft away and gotta go through the snow to get it. It did rain last night so I don't know yet if the snowblower will move it. If not, I post hole it.

Fully agree. Ready for spring planting here as well. It just needs to warm up a bit yet.

39° out 71° in. Ash and catalpa again now. It looks like I'll be burning 50% catalpa until we don't need to burn anything until fall.

I just have to remember to mix the catalpa with something else, because even totally dry catalpa isn't a great burning wood by itself. Box elder, fir, and other pine are in the pile. Any oak in the pile here is going into the stacks for 2025-26.

I actually planned that, for shoulder season wood, but I forgot that is what I had stacked at the house.

I usually plant around April 7-15 depending on long range forecast. I’ve snuck some in early before and I’ve been bit in the butt for doing it several times. The older I get the more I’ve learned that one week later won’t mean a thing. Even if Frost doesn’t get them, the colder nights stunt their growth enough that I really think it pays to just wait out Mother Nature. She always wins.

47/66. Came home and lit noodles and pine then added a chunk of ash (from 2016) :emb:. We are hoarders after all, right? :wacky: I sat on these pieces in hopes to turn them on the lathe due to the curly figure. I think it’s time to let go.

Then threw in 2 more mulberry and a hunk of oak.
