Does anybody take a new chain out of the box and install it on your favourite saw and then take a file to it? I do. Took the original chain off the 572xp and filed the new one. Maybe I’m just picky.
I've never had a chain be as sharp as when it first comes out the box, even when a saw shop puts it on a machine. Don't know why I'd mess that up with a file.
Depends on the chain. Most chain I throw on the Simington to put a good work square grind on it. That’s usually quite a bit faster than stock
I'll use it first until it loses it's edge, then take the file to it. I'm unwilling to sacrifice any top plate length just because I don't fully approve of the factory grind
Every single chain get kissed by the grinder before touching the bar. Square grind, Oregon 75CK. Drop the rakers down to 30 thou. I want my angles set and ready for my wood not whatever the factory uses for the catch all. Strait out of the box works good, but. A well tuned and sharpened chain works better and is the best "mod" you can do for your saw. Owl
I always hit them with a file, then do the rakers. I have never had a chain truly sharp or the rakers right straight off a roll. Teeth don't take much, but rakers are always screwy.
Wondering where yall are buying all these new unsharp chains?? Just messing... Whatever works for you.
yep, just did it the other day. Made two light passes on the cutters and then hit the rakers. I don't like how out of the box chains cut.
