Took delivery if some silver maple today. Asked about the controlls. Told him I run equipment for a living. Then he said he'd let me run it. The controlls are backwards from an excavator. So it was a little confusing. But at least I got to try it.
Some of the wood was rotted out or big crotches so I just burned it on the burn pile. I can't seem to upload the other pics.
Cool. I’d like to run a grapple but not in front of the owner. I like to learn most things in seclusion.
Interesting slab sided grapple truck. Never seen anything other than regular bunks around here. One company had a 'tray' made from an old metal dumpster that they could pull on & off the truck with the grapple, effectively turning it into a sort of dump truck.
I noticed the controls for the dipper stick are completely backwards. You push the lever to make the stick come closer. I think they did that so if you accidentally hit your hand while holding the lever with the log it will push the load away from you instead of pulling it into you. Safety feature I guess.
This 7 way crotch is destine for the bon fire pile. After rolling the logs I like to finish the cut with the lightweight saw. Plus no yanking on the rope over and over. I feel like I'm becoming a wood snob, or maybe just lazy? Tree services can bring so much, I start running low on space. So I started burning the crotches on a bonfire. Its so time consuming to fight the crotches when I could just grab another log instead. Tree service is planning to bring me 2 more loads in the next few weeks. So why go thru the hassle if I already have plenty of logs. Some will rot before I ever get time to process them.
One reason I would cringe getting logs dropped if I had the space. What percentage of your drops end up being chunklies?
Not as much as you'd think. When it does happen, they hear from me. It's a good gig for both parties so they don't want to mess it up.
Wow. I wouldn't say anything because if they said "no more wood for you," I'd be up a creek. I don't wanna go back to asking around for trees to cut. It is so much easier to have it dropped off. If they drop a load of hallowed out cottonwood an knotty pine. I just burn it on a bonfire. Or, if not for the grace of God I could be like sandhillbilly driving 30 miles 1 way to cut an elm yard(homestead) tree. (Hats off to the man) I think it mostly depends on your location and situation.
Tree service blessed me again. He thanked me for taking the brush. The other day. So he brought me a load of logs. My very first birch wood. I'm excited. He brought a mix of mostly elm, pine a Hackberry, and honey locust. the big 48" dia rounds and crotches have a warm bed for the night.
Looks like river birch, lowest of the birch as far as btu's. Dries fast and goes to punk fast too. Congrats on your first. Always fun to score a wood you never/seldom get.
