So, I get this blurb in a newsletter today from my OWB manufacturor...anybody else heard about this? Sounds a bit crazy to me and more than a little over the top....what say you? A Record-Breaking Winter? Heard about "El Niño?" Chances are you will hear a lot about it in the next month or two. Weather science experts and Meteorologists at the National Weather Service (NWS) say that there is a 99% chance that the we will to see a huge cold-front sooner in the year than has ever happened, which will produce not just record-breaking snowfall, but according to Dr. Boris Scvediok, a doctor of global weather sciences, record shattering snow storms across the board, affecting the entire United States. Dr. Scvediok says, "For the sake of comparison to the past winter, lets say that your area received a total of twenty inches of accumulative snow for the season. Because this year the snowfall is predicted to start by the end of September or the beginning of October, you can expect to multiply that number by up to five, ten, maybe even twenty times in some areas. In the worst zones, you could see 50 times the amount of snow you've had in the past. This is the type of winter the American public needs to prepare for. Several meteorologists are saying not to buy into what the models are showing. I can tell you from forty years of scientific weather research, they are doing you a disservice," Dr. Scvediok told the Associated Press on Friday. "The Northeast, Ohio Valley, and Midwestern states will definitely get hit the hardest." Public safety organizations are encouraging the masses to prepare themselves by obtaining proper necessities. James Satterfield from the National Fire and Safety Advisory Board says preparation can save lives. "Don't wait until temperatures plummet into a freeze; obtain cold weather clothing and footwear, including wool thermal socks. It is also crucial to have plenty of batteries, candles, weather radios, you name it. Get prepared, it's coming." Satterfield stated. "First and foremost, make sure you have an effective plan in place to make sure you have plenty of bread and milk." Even the FDA predicts supply and demand could cause shortages, causing the prices of bread and milk to increase substantially.
Well, my dogs agree with this forecast. I asked them how bad this winter will be and they said "RUFF!"
Really? Well we had 120+in of snow here last year, so 500+in this year. That could be a problem, but I'm betting most of it's hype. Winter seems to happen to some degree every year, some worse than others. We've made it through the past winters, & I'm guessing we'll make this one too. Longer term cycles seem to be a pretty good bet, my kids will tell their kids about the real winters we used to have, just like I told my kids about the winters in the 70's when we had snow on the ground for 4 or 5 months straight. Around here, if the mets get a 3 day forecast close they're doing well. That being said, anybody that doesn't prepare for cold & snow around here, pretty much deserves what they get. A C
I've been seeing posts from guys that have the farmers almanac info but this is the first I've seen of anything like the El Niño explanation. I believe the affect El Niño has to a certain degree but what your posting looks out of whack. Hopefully I won't eat my words come next March when it's on the downswing.
I think at this point any talk about how the winter will be is premature. Forecasts aren't reliable outside of 5 days, so how can we predict months in advance? Now having said that, I love winter and would really like to see a cold, snowy one!
Pretty sure Dennis posted this a few days ago and someone mentioned it came from "The Onion" website, which is well known for outrageous stories. Gonna' be kinda' tough getting all that snow off the roof with my roof rake....I won't be able to see out the windows either.
I know forecasts can be done long range once certain jet stream patterns are set but to determine anything with numbers beyond this is saying too much
But this isn't the first time we have had El Nino. So I have a hard time hearing people say that this will be the worst we have ever seen. At the end of the day, my gut says to be prepared for a cold one though.
That is from an onion type website but it does look like it will be a good winter (good if like snow and cold, and I do) in the east and Midwest.
Little strange thing I noticed is one of our pet rabbits fur is coming in earlier, thicker and longer this year. Coincidence probably but just something I noticed.
I think it was around the 70s... we had that much snow here. I remember running the old Polaris sled we had, up onto the edge of the eaves of the farm roof. My bro and I dug a tunnel through 8' of snow to the livingroom window... and we didn't even break the window when we got to it.
haha, this is funny, and it's pure, well, bovine feces. Do the math, 20 inches of snow, times 20, that's 400 inches, 33 FFET, now 50 times 20 is a thousand inches, or 83 feet. All I can sa is, if it snows 33 feet in Pennsylvania I'm gonna have some trouble getting to the woodpile
Hoax report. Unfortunately, this report made it to several sites and forums, generating much talk. 50x snow in some zones. Sheesh. But after all it was on the net, so it must be true.
Balderdash! Our local weather gurus are telling us highs in the 70's and lows in the 40's with very little in the way of precipitation right through the end of the month.
Sorry for posting it again, didn't see the first one. Its amazing to me that the people creating the newsletter at my OWB manufacturer actually put this out as a sales tactic. Very scary thought and well, not very professional...IMO.
Those hoax reports hit FB just like the real ones and get mainstreamed but the innocent as fact. You can see how easy it is to damage a reputation by doing the same thing when you what to sway opinions.
I kind of hope we have a lot of snow this winter. For one, I like snow, and we don’t get a whole lot of it in southern OH. But after spending a couple hours shoveling my driveway every week last winter with all the extra snow we got, I invested in an old Wheel Horse garden tractor, fixed up a few things on it, put wheel weights and tire chains on it, and did some trading to get a decent snow plow for the front. My wife thinks I’m wasting my time and money, and is going to laugh her @$$ off if that thing just sits in the shed all winter going unused! So I’m kind of counting on a cold, snowy winter to prove her wrong!!
Sounds like you got a good "parachute" for this winter... you'll be very glad you have it, if you need it...
