    Woodnut, your second picture is definetely beech, as its smooth grey bark shows. The bark on the other logs is not as smooth but they might also be beech since as for the skin on humans, bark on old trees tend to become rougher with variable depth furrows.

    Pic one is some type of red oak...possibly pin oak.
    pic two is beech
    pic three maybe tulip (yellow) poplar
    Pic four not sure..post more pics of fresh cut and split will be more helpful

    I see red oak in the first one. Maybe the last two pictures also, they look like the same piece.

    2 is Beech, the others look more like Hickory than Oak to me. If its oak the smell should be obvious.
